Music reviews of Red CadillacMusic Review: Some Great Memphis-delta blues party music Rating: 3 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
What we have here is a solid, soulful Memphis blues, delta R&B album that would sound nice playing in the backround of your next party. Many of the songs have a sameness to them, but overall enough variety comes thru each song, so you can tell them apart. However, for variety we are saying, that out of 14 songs, only two are slower numbers. Also, out of 14 songs, nine are about how the lead singer, Johnny Rawls, is going to have sex with some honey, one song about a woman cheating on him, and the rest of the songs about everything else in life. Sadly, its the lyrical content on most of the songs, that's the album's weakest point. For party music, I doubt it would much matter. I LOVE blues lyrics with back woods southern slang, double entendres, or clever turns of phrase; something like Otis Spann's "MULE KICKING DOWN THE STALL", or SPOONFUL. Now, RED CADILLAC doesnt have bad lyrics, in fact a couple are of them are excellent. About half the lyrics get old fast, since they harp on the same subject...getting some booty. Also, I was surprised at the lack of extended solos on the guitar, or sax. Sadly, there is only one guitar solo on this album, on HARD TIMES. Its a melodic guitar workout lasting one verse and chorus, but for whatever reason, that's it for the album. Most of the songs open with simular guitar or sax riffs, for about 2 or 4 measures. The keyboard playing is fine, very versitile thruout the album. In fact that keyboard player is the band's secret weapon. WASH YOUR HANDS, a slow tempo back burner, starts with some nice piano work, then opens up to sax, sweet guitar riffs, solid Hammond B3 work, all matched to a sincere, heart felt lyric. It's definately one of the hippest, most soulful songs on the album. The other slow tempo song, is the album's stand out number, NO ONE GIVES A D*MN. This lyric shouts out against the coldness of the world, how the sense of fellowship has gone, how preachers are hypocrits headed for hell, and puts down our Iraq war as senseless. Once again, another lyric with sincerity, insight and depth. For me, it's the best song on the album. It only makes the generic cheating songs that predominate the album, seem all the more formulated. The lead vocals, and the backround singers when used, are strong, and very soulful, a bit like Marvin Gaye's sexual healing period. (Gaye's an obvious influence with Johnny Rawls.) Maybe the worst thing I can say, is that with almost every song mid tempo, running between 3 and 4 minutes long, orchestrated and arranged with mostly that Memphis sound, there's little variety. If only one song cut loose, with a nice solo interplay between the guitarist and the keyboardist, and lasted past the 4 minute limit, my ears would have stood up like a hound dog hearing a bitch in heat howlin five miles away. Compared to my blues heros, no solos is a strike out. Of course, its all a matter of taste. Most people dont care about what I'm talking about here for their party music, and if you don't care, I can honestly say that this is a really cool blues album. I'm sure at your next bar-b-q, lots of friends around, Johnny Walker and Jim Bean flowing thru the crowd, this album would go down smooth. And whats wrong with that? A last word of warning, tho. If you don't like that soul, blues and R&B sound from the early and mid 70s, this album won't groove you. But if you love 70s R&B, rock solid musicianship, and memphis-delta blues, then you'd do well to buy this CD. It'd be nice to have on hand for your next party.

Description of Red CadillacRed Cadillac has been nominated for Soul Blues Album of the Year and Johnny Rawls nominated for Male Soul Vocalist of the Year. The Blues Music Associaition Awards, W.C. Handys, are the blues version of a Grammy. Red Cadillac was # 1 on the blues charts in August and stayed in the top twenty for three months. With his first #1 hit and the Blues Music Award nominations, Johnny Rawls is finally getting the recognition he deserves. The album has received rave reviews, including from both Blues Revue and Living Blues magazines. It is an instant soul classic and has been compared to the great soul recordings of Stax, Motown and Hi Records. While recapturing that sound and feel, Red Cadillac has a 21st century attitude with some social commentary about the current mess along with good time songs, love songs, love lost songs and occasionally a suggestive lyric or two. These are 14 well- crafted songs, nearly a double album, performed by an artist at the pinnacle of his career, backed by top musicians, including Texas band, the Rays who also backed him on the critically-acclaimed No Boundaries CD. The songs are all originals written by Rawls and Bob Trenchard, who wrote the No Boundaries songs for him.
