Music Review: A Most Beautiful And Greatest Christmas Crooner Release

This 12 track 1958 album from JOHNNY MATHIS - MERRY CHRISTMAS is the greatest crooner christmas release along with the 1959 album, CONNIE FRANCIS - CHRISTMAS IN MY HEART (and perhaps three others mentioned later in this review). Both JOHNNY'S and CONNIE'S christmas albums go beyond the walls of 'crooner' christmas music and take you into something really dreamy and magical.
Both JOHNNY'S singing and PERCY FAITH AND HIS ORCHESTRA are at the best they have ever been. At least in my opinion. Due to both the singer and orchestra being at their best, you can be sure you are getting something special and boy, do you ever get something special on this album.
SLIGHRIDE has a most beautiful and original/unique take of the song and so much so that it was probably the most famous song from JOHNNY on this album. It may be the greatest version of the song ever recorded (perhaps along with the unique version by JACK JONES on his 1964 christmas album, THE JACK JONES CHRISTMAS ALBUM).
I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS is, along with the version by CONNIE FRANCIS on her christmas album mentioned above, one of the greatest versions if not the greatest version ever recorded.
And every other song, whether the non-religious (first half) or religious (second half), are all among the greatest versions if not the greatest version ever recorded. So, songs like WHITE CHRISTMAS (dreamy), WINTER WONDERLAND, THE CHRISTMAS SONG, IT CAME UPON A MISNIGHT CLEAR, and all others are songs that are beautiful beyond words.
There are also 2 other songs that I believe were recorded in the early 1960's (as a 2 song ep) that are added as the last two songs on this cd but their style is similar to the original album so the whole cd is great from start to end. And as with the CONNIE FRANCIS christmas cd from above, this is perfect background christmas music for both you and company for over the christmas holidays.
Two other cd's that I would recommend with this JOHNNY MATHIS one (along with the CONNIE FRANCIS and JACK JONES ones from above) are PERRY COMO - SEASONS GREETINGS (1959) and KATE SMITH - THE KATE SMITH CHRISTMAS ALBUM (1966). These five are the greatest crooner christmas styled albums ever recorded (well, to my liking anyway) but this JOHNNY one and CONNIE one are the dreamiest and most magical. In fact, the only christmas album that I would say is more dreamy and magical than the JOHNNY and CONNIE ones is the LIVING STRINGS - THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS album from 1963, and bear in mind that in one format or another, I own about 200 or more christmas albums so this says alot about these 2 christmas albums of JOHNNY MATHIS and CONNIE FRANCIS..
Again, this MERRY CHRISTMAS album by Mr. MATHIS is a classic and masterpiece of christmas music that is essential listening for the christmas season.
