Music Review: A Long Overdue Reissue!!

There are those times when true music listeners must be sure that record company executives suffer from some form of tin-ear syndrome. Why Mathis fans have had to wait this long for JOHNNY'S MOOD and FAITHFULLY on compact disc remains a mystery. We can only hope that Mathis' eclectic and diverse recordings of Soul/Pop/R&B/Traditional albums of the late 1970s well into the 1980s will someday be reissued on CD.
While it shouldn't be necessary to say, Mathis delivers his own special brand of ethereal magic on classic standards like "How High the Moon", and "April in Paris" on JOHNNY'S MOOD. On FAITHFULLY, he delivers much of the same on songs like "Tonight", "Maria" and "You Better Go Know" that at the time of their recording were merely on the verge of becoming standards. Both recordings were orchestrated by Glenn Osser, an underrated arranger whose orchestrations weaved disparate songs together so well that an album had the thematic cohesion of a great movie score. (Who can forget the unified feel of Mathis' Osser-orchestrated album HEAVENLY?)
It is still anybody's guess why FAITHFULLY and HEAVENLY, which were released back-to-back, were not included in a two-CD album package? Both albums had a similar synthesis and offered title tunes ("Heavenly" and "Faithfully") written by a then unknown composer named Burt Bacharach; and HEAVENLY and FAITHFULLY both charted at No. 1 and 2 on the Pop Album Charts in 1959 and 1960 respectively. Nevertheless, JOHNNY'S MOOD and FAITHFULLY work well as a package.
This remastering is absolutely crystal clear. This set is also a welcome addition to anyone seeking to preserve their old vinyl copies, and it is a perfect introduction for younger fans who are only beginning to scratch the surface of Mathis' prolific discography. Buy with confidence.
