Music Review: Panther Quick and Leather Tough

When I was growing up in Lakewood, California, we had a Kaye Halbert 24 inch black and white (well of course color TV hadn't been invented yet) television and my favorite shows, other than Superman, were westerns, "Have Gun Will Travel," "Maverick", "Lawman" and my favorite, "The Rebel", staring Nick Adams, which ran from 59 to 61 then went into reruns. I loved the theme song and still wind up singing it today, a half century later. It just pops into my head, usually when I'm driving alone. "Johnny Yuma is a Rebel. He wanders alone. He's panther quick and leather tough and he figures that he's been pushed enough." What great lyrics and who better to sing them than Johnny Cash. Even back then, I knew, he was the man.
"Ring of Fire" is my second favorite song on this record and it's probably everybody else's favorite. I didn't have a car in 63, but I rode around with friends who did and every time it came on the radio, and it did that a lot, we'd all chime in with the chorus, "I went down, down, down into the ring of fire, that burning ring of fire." Yeah, Johnny was the man.
Years later, when his daughter Rosanne released "Tennessee Flat Top Box" on her King's Record Shop LP I was immediately taken back to the original. I have them both in iTunes and often play them back to back. Rosanne's is as good as her dad's and that's saying something. And then there is the brilliant "I Still Miss Someone," a timeless Johnny Cash original. What a great song. Johnny Cash is the Man.
