Music reviews of Personal File (Dig) (Slip) (Spkg)

Music Review: GREAT Collection of Great Solo Performances! Superior to Johnny's 1994 Solo Performances on AMERICAN RECORDINGS!
Rating: 5 Stars

PERSONAL FILE from Johnny Cash is one of his best album collections ever, especially for being so affordable when compared to his box sets which often cost 2x, 3x, or more than this one! PERSONAL FILE is two overflowing CDs, stuffed full of entertaining and interesting performances, for the price of one CD, pretty much!

This 2 CD set can rightfully be compared to the stripped down, minimalist sound of Johnny's 1994 comeback album, AMERICAN RECORDINGS, which was the third and final lucrative career reboot for Johnny Cash, garnering him hit video exposure on MTV, and gaining him a new generation of young fans, and featuring every single song with ONLY Johnny Cash strumming his lone guitar. PERSONAL FILE features this same musical arrangement on every song, and I easily prefer PERSONAL FILE over AMERICAN RECORDINGS because PERSONAL FILE has nearly 3x the running time, better songs, and stronger singing and guitar playing from a much younger Johnny Cash of nearly 15 to 25 years before the AMERICAN RECORDINGS.

Disc One of PERSONAL FILE is all regular songs, while all of the songs on Disc Two are Gospel themed! So the disc Two makes PERSONAL FILE one of Johnny's best Gospel CDs, too!

On many of the songs, Johnny records a short introduction into his tape recorder, which makes the CD often sound like a live performance where the audience cannot be heard--as if he is performing in your living room, in a way! In these intros we often learn interesting trivia about the songs. "Far Away Places" is the first song Johnny ever performed in public (outside of school), as a kid at a talent show, at that. "Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes," was a song he did, by request, at a high school event with a teacher playing piano, Johnny tells us. Johnny wrote "Virgie," which is about his aunt, and "I Wanted So," which is about his father and how he felt distanced from him (as is dramatized in the 2005 film, WALK THE LINE, pretty much)!

Disc Two is my favorite of the two CDs that you get with PERSONAL FILE, because it is all Gospel music, and it is all decent, good to great! "Have a Drink of Water" is about the Bible scene when Jesus talks to the woman at the well, a famous Bible scene, and a song whose original writer is unknown. "What is Man?" is another Bible reference, from the Psalms. "Sanctified" is a funny song about being tempted by the world's logic to live sinfully, and how a Saved man must persevere to "whip the devil" and stay clean from sin--Johnny cannot be moved (in this song, if not always being able to resist in real life for Johnny). "In the Sweet By and By" and "Farther Along" are great classics, here done in the special arrangement of just Johnny and his lone guitar.

Disc Two does have a couple of problematic tunes about Mary Magdalene, which were probably innocent enough 25 or 35 years ago, but in light of the latest Jesus controversies in the media, like the awful THE DA VINCI CODE book and movie which claim that Mary Magdalene married Jesus and had a daughter fathered by Jesus, thus supposedly, erroneously proving Jesus was really just a mortal man and not the God of Christianity, etc... So unfortunately, these two songs could easily be misconstrued to support that viewpoint of making Mary Magdalene much more important and prominent in the life of Jesus, which contradicts Bible teachings and readings. These two Mary Magdalene songs are the worst songs on either disc of PERSONAL FILE, in my opinion, because of this possible, controversial link. This is unfortunate.

If you have already progressed beyond Johnny Cash's biggest, world famous hit songs, as a Johnny Cash listener, then this is a great CD to have. If you are still new to Johnny Cash, then I would heartily recommend THE LEGEND OF JOHNNY CASH, (the single disc version, not the box set), which is from the American record label, but features all the biggest hit songs from Johnny's entire career, all sounding GREAT, especially noticeable on the oldest and most famous tunes from 40 and 50 years ago!

If you are already a confirmed Johnny Cash fan, searching beyond the biggest hits, then I would recommend BITTER TEARS which is a strange album from his folk music era of the mid-1960s about the American Indians theme; or try GOSPEL GLORY which I think is his single, best Gospel CD ever released. For Johnny Cash oddities, the best has to be his reverent reading of the entire NEW TESTAMENT of the Holy Bible, in spoken word, (no music at all), which is very affordably price for a 16 CD set (around $2 per disc--can't beat that price).

Description of Personal File (Dig) (Slip) (Spkg)

Deep within the House of Cash, Johnny Cash?s recording studio, office suite, and museum in Hendersonville, Tennessee, behind the studio?s control room, was a small vault-like space in which many of his most prized possessions were stored. A collection of rare firearms dating back to the 18th Century, some personal effects of Jimmie Rodgers, artwork and letters from fans all over the world and much more was carefully arranged and locked away for safekeeping. Then there were the tapes. Hundreds of them. Demos from songwriters, album masters, multi-tracks of the ABC television series, and some boxes marked simply "Personal File." These are Johnny?s most intimate sessions, recorded mostly in 1973 and then subsequently at his leisure. Just a lone voice and an acoustic guitar, singing songs and telling stories about them. A concept that has since come to be thought of as revelatory but, as is evident in this stunning new set, is something Johnny Cash had been doing all along?if only for his personal file. This 2-CD collection features 49 previously unreleased recordings.
The recordings Johnny Cash started making for Rick Rubin's American label in 1993 launched a journey through the Great American Songbook--from traditional tunes to alt-rock--that continued until, literally, the end of his life. What wasn't known at the time was that Cash had anticipated the American Recordings concept 20 years earlier. A series of informal private sessions he recorded in 1973 featuring just voice and guitar--with a few numbers added between then and 1982--were left untouched at his House of Cash studio, unearthed only after his death in 2003. These 49 songs, labeled "Personal File," show him exploring 19th-century parlor tunes, Tin Pan Alley pop, gospel, little-known Cash originals, classic and contemporary country, and even a recitation of Robert Service's poem "The Cremation of Sam McGee." On many, his spoken introductions reveal personal ties to a given number. Cash reprises early country fare like Jimmie Rodgers's "My Mother Was a Lady" and "The Letter Edged in Black." He also revisits later country classics like the Louvin Brothers' "When I Stop Dreaming," close friend Johnny Horton's hit "When It's Springtime in Alaska (It's Forty Below)," John Prine's "Paradise," and stepdaughter Carlene Carter's "It Takes One to Know Me." The second disc is a virtual hymnbook, blending traditional gospel and A.P. Carter tunes with a sacred composition by Rodney Crowell and Cash gospel originals. For those enchanted by the illness-ravaged soulfulness of Cash's later American recordings, hearing him in his prime is not only breathtaking--it underscores the depth of his still-remarkable musical vision. --Rich Kienzle
