Music reviews of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - Original Motion Picture SoundtrackMusic Review: Great, but not quite excellent.
Star Wars Soundtrack Review by Keel3 (leek@ccds.cincinnati.oh.us) From the opening B flat major chord, to the riveting ending, the music of Star Wars has been the one aspect that has captivated me the most. To me, a movie is a modern opera, or ballet. To fully express the emotions, one must have a magnanimous score along with the acting; one of the few ways available for modern-day composers to display their works. John Williams has been one of the greatest composers this century, and with the soundtracks from the original Star Wars trilogy, he completed a masterpiece. His newest incarnation of the Star Wars saga presents itself quite differently from the previous soundtracks. It is clearly not flawless and at times can be quite frustrating listening to it (more on that later.) However, my expectations upon receiving the soundtrack were quite high, but now that I've had a few days to settle down, it seems that this soundtrack is uniquely familiar, and is definitely Star Wars in all of its grandeur. First, let's talk about what's good in the soundtrack. I was pleased to hear the familiar theme at the beginning as John Williams originally opted to have a different, darker theme introducing the prequel trilogy. However, I believe that no matter what episode the a Star Wars movie is, it should be opened with the familiar, brassy tones of Luke's theme. Duel of the Fates is an excellent, familiarly John-Williams-style fanfare. In fact, it occurs quite often within the action sequences. This could be the prequel's version of the Rebel Fanfare. However, what is truly magnificent is Anakin's theme. It is a sweet, light-hearted theme that permeates throughout the score quite often. What is amazing is that Williams was able to incorporate four very familiar notes from the Imperial March, or Darth Vader's theme. It catches you off guard, and is a very good usage of foreshadowing future events. Jar Jar's theme is similar to the Parade of Ewoks from Return of the Jedi, and works quite well. Other than that, I could not yet distinguish distinct themes, yet it all sounded Star Warsian. The tracks ( I won't reveal names) each are about five minutes long, and each usually contains one of the new themes from the movie, be it Anakin's theme, or Duel of the Fates. Track 14 is quite good, and is reminiscent of the Nazi's theme from Indy III. Track 16 is possibly the best with Yoda's themes as well as the Imperial March making cameo appearance. Other cameo appearances include the Empire's theme and Luke's theme. However, it would have been nice to hear them more prevalent throughout the score. ...Which brings us to what's wrong with the score. The following is a list of my quibbles about the new soundtrack. -This cannot possibly be the entire soundtrack. All the previous three have been two discs long. Either Sony is trying to bilk us out of William's magnificent score, or (God forbid) this is the entire score, and Williams is not quite as prolific as he used to be. -The trumpets in the opening fanfare (Luke's theme) seem drowned out. Almost intimidated by the rest of the orchestra. I was hoping to hear them blaring. -The first half of the last track seems to be out of place. It sounds like something from a Japanimation cartoon. I can't fully judge this until I see the movie along with the music. However, this piece just doesn't sound right when compared to the others. The first used a throne room motif, the second used Han and Leia's theme, and the third one used two different ones (for original and special edition.) There also was no pause in between the two last, themes. Usually there is a rest or a ritard (slowing down of the music)between the final scene's music, and the ending credits. -Speaking of the last track, I was glad to see that the standard ending was used. Like the previous three, when the credits start, you are treated to Luke's theme, then the Rebel Fanfare, then usually it splits into the different themes introduced in that movie, but comes back for a magnificent ending. Here, that magnificent ending is strangely missing. (If you want to know what I'm talking about, listen to the music at the end of both trailers. They both play what I'm talking about.) The music merely fades away from Anakin's theme. This is a drastic change from the previous movies. -There were certain times that I was sure I was going to hear a theme from a previous movie (Just because I trained my ear that way from listening to the scores over and over again.) These theme's include Luke's, Leia's, Yoda's, Han and the Princess's, Darth Vader's, and probably the most aggravating (because I liked it the most) Ben's/Force theme which brings me to my final point. -Probably the most aggravating aspect was the Force theme (Ben's theme) is hardly used! The first time it appears is in track 8, and the first time we hear it fully developed is track 11. I think that this theme was the best one from the previous movies, and that it could have been used much, much more. Along with this, they could have done the same with Yoda's theme. These may seem like nothing to you, but I noticed them. However, the things that Williams has done here are great. Although they may not be awe-inspiring like the scene where Luke gazes across the land during the sunset, it does have a very memorable score. And of course, since it is John Williams, it is very well done. My final rating would be 4 ½ stars out of 5.
