Music reviews of Minority Report [Original Motion Picture Score]

Music Review: A very good report...
Rating: 5 Stars

Well, I think that 2002 seems to be a very great year for composer John Williams. Having already released Star Wars Episode II and Minority Report, and is still working on both "Harry Potter 2" and the Steven Spielberg-directed "Catch Me If You Can" this actually seems to be the busiest (and may be best) year so far. This is the latest in a row of solid efforts by John Williams in the last two years. (And don`t worry. I am not going to spoil the film for you who haven`t seen it).

Critics complain, (as always with Williams today), try to find things wrong. Fans have a great time. I am a fan.
In fact, I do not think we`ve heard anything like this from Williams before. At least this isn`t what we are familiar to.
Like Steven Spielberg himself says, "this score is not lush with melody. It is nevertheless brilliantly constructed and forcefull in it`s rhytms. If most of his previous works have been in color, think of this as his first 'black and white' score. You feel it more than you hear it".
And that`s a very good way to describe what "Minority Report" is like. Well, not exactly. The part that says that you feel it more than you hear it is both wrong and right at the same time. When you see a film scored by John Williams, his music is often very noticeable and almost makes the film (Star Wars and Jurassic Park are two great examples of that). When I saw "Minority Report, I barely noticed the music at all except for may be one or two times.
On CD, it is more than noticeable.
If I would have to chose one of Williams two summer scores (MR and Star Wars), I would prefer this. There is a strong complexity in this score that was not present in "Attack of The Clones" - even in it's almost silent moments of underscore, it keeps that complexity up enough to make the listener satisfied.
The score begins very slowly with the frightening "Can You See" and then slowly builds up it`s complexity until it suddenly bursts out in the pulse-pounding action cue "Anderton`s Great Escape", which I think is a highlight of the score, then slows down a bit and then builds up yet again to it`s climax "Psychic Truth & Finale" and it`s absolutely stunning finale "A New Beginning".
Also note that the opening track ("Minority Report") is actually the end credits of the film. If you want to hear the score from beginning to end, then start listen from track 2 and then listen to the first track. There is a bit of Bernard Hermann in this music (and that`s not so strange - Williams once said in an interview that Hermann has always been his greatest influence). Still, there isn`t too much Hermann here either.
But as you have may already understood, this isn`t the lush, bright, awe-inspiring adventure music that you could expect to hear from John Williams.
Therefore, it is of importance that you are concentrated on the music while listening. I think that most of the critics that complain didn`t listen that carefully - they`d just put it into their CD players, expecting to hear something like "Star Wars" or "Jurassic Park" and then it wasn`t what they thought - of course they were disappointed.
Like the film itself, this score contains a lot of dark humour and isn`t apparent at the first listen. But after each listening, you will discover new details and then, just look how rich and varied "Minority Report" really is.
Whether it will be a classic or not will be more apparent as time passes. But one thing is for sure : "Minority Report"
yet again proves how variable and talented our maestro John Williams is. He will most likely continue like this all the way till his death.
LONG LIVE JOHN WILLIAMS!

Description of Minority Report [Original Motion Picture Score]

While Steven Spielberg's sci-fi detective thriller revolves around the intriguing premise of future cops arresting criminals before their crimes, beneath its high-tech veneer it asks a simple but infinitely powerful question: Do we have the power to alter our own destiny? Coming on the heels of the director's posthumous collaboration with Stanley Kubrick, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, it also affords longtime Spielberg musical collaborator John Williams a rare back-to-back opportunity to construct a musical future-world. The composer's efforts here are largely a forceful departure from A.I.'s sparkling minimalist influences, employing an enduring cinematic cliché--that film futures often sound much like the works of early-20th-century serialist/modernist classical composers--that puts a compelling new spin on the ever slippery concept of postmodernism. If the cues here occasionally recall the jagged edges, dark corners, and rhythmic fury of some of Goldsmith's best sci-fi scores, it's only a tribute to both legends' deep musical roots and preternatural scoring instincts. But make no mistake, this is pure Williams at his most compelling, employing his full arsenal of technique and always masterful use of color to construct a new genre--call it "future noir"--from inspirations as diverse as Bartók, Ligeti, Penderecki, Webern, and Schoenberg. Like Herrmann's suspenseful scores for Hitchcock (one of the film's intentional musical touchstones), there may be nary a memorable melody in it, but it's a riveting--and occasionally harrowing--listen from opening bars to its final, minimalist-tinged string flourishes. --Jerry McCulley
