Music Review: Stewart Emerges From the Bunker To Conquer a New Century

How can anything recorded 18 years ago sound so fresh and alive in the year 2000? Leave it to John Stewart, whose singer/songwriter career reaches back even further than his time well spent with the legendary Kingston Trio, to come up with an album of previously unreleased tracks that may give him his best shot at the charts since "Dream Babies Go Hollywood" (1980). In many ways, "Wires From the Bunker" is the sequel to "Hollywood" that never happened, due to Stewart's label (RSO) folding in 1981. Lindsey Buckingham is a contributor to "Wires," continuing his helpful hitmaking ways that gave Stewart his first solo hit, 1979's "Gold." Stewart was in a groove, for lack of a better term, when these 18 songs were born. He had redefined folk rock, and "Wires" is a time trip to that historical musical watershed. Stewart revisits Kingston Trio nuggets like "Molly Dee" (the first of many songs of his that the group recorded) and "Old John Webb," paying his respects while leaving a fresh coat of paint. But it is his own compositions from the Eighties, many heard here for the first time, that provide the backbone of this album. Standouts include "Tears of the Sun," "Under Heavy Fire," and "All the Desperate Men." The story of how this album came to exist is almost as amazing as the songs, themselves. It seems John was getting ready to move and found an old box filled with audio cassettes. It was either toss them or mail them to friend Tom DeLisle (a freelance writer who does a dandy annotation job on "Wires"), and Tom kept them safe until such a time as John was willing to listen to them again with objective ears. Restoration and re-mixing have yielded a fine album from that box that nearly went to Dumpsterville. Perhaps it is the very fact that these songs were not confined to a record company vault that gives them their newborn appeal. "Wires From the Bunker," songs for the Ages.

Label problems prevented John from releasing this album, which was recorded immediately after his 1979 smash Bombs Away Dream Babies LP. So now, here it is for the first time, with appearances by Lindsay Buckingham and John's ex-Kingston Trio mate Nick Reynolds and featuring 18 tracks of folk-rock greatness!The summer of 1979 seemed to be John Stewart's season. With the brooding hit "Gold," the former Kingston Trio member attained the chart success that had long alluded him. A year and a half later, he had no label, no chance for a follow-up. But in the early '80s, Stewart was making some very catchy, literate, and accessible pop music. These unreleased (and nearly destroyed) early '80s demos are the evidence. Stewart reworks some old Kingston Trio numbers, some gems from his '60s and '70s country-folk career, and adds many new lyrics, never heard before or since. The demo sound--a bit tinny and remote--doesn't do justice to the fine songwriting contained here, nor does the occasionally overwrought and overly rocking arrangements. More streamlined, almost Byrds-like efforts such as "Cheyenne" and "Diamonds in the Coal" get closer to the poetic soul of Stewart's folk-rock vision. Newcomers might be perplexed by this spotty compilation, but those passionate about this underappreciated journeyman singer-songwriter will warmly welcome the discoveries. --Roy Kasten
