Music Review: rare treat

As a rule, we shun "live" recordings like the plague. Far too often they fall victim to the many variables of an onstage performance. While, admittedly there is an occasional, once-in-a-lifetime occurrence that can never be repeated, duplicated or equalled, the usual fare consists of inadequate recording equipment, crowd noise, or burned out performers needing a break after an arduous tour schedule. In essence, live concerts offer only an occasional gem amidst a veritable rubble of unimpressive noise.
Then, there is the Complete Phoenix Concerts by John Stewart. (Should that be there "are"?) This is one of those rare gems I was talking about - it is so right on for content and quality that you have the feeling that you were there. This isn't said just for effect - we WERE there in Phoenix at this 70s concert so we know whereof we speak. Tears came to our eyes as we once again relived an evening when this sadly underrated and much-missed folk icon went through an evening of inspired musical magic.
This is all the more remarkable when we realized this was a German reissue of the original, out-of-print, American album. Often, such offerings are of dubious quality, if not outright substandard junk. Pleasantly, his one is bang on for quality and well worth the money!
If you're a Stewart fan, at any phase of his career, you own it to yourself to investigate this CD. You won't be able to "hold it on the road."
