Music Review: One of my favorites!

This is one of my favorite John Stewart albums, and that's saying something considering how many of his albums I own. This is a fully realized studio album, using a great complement of musicians. The album contains a great combination of catchy tunes, thoughtful ballads, and insightful ruminations on society.
The album immediately grabs you with the song "Irresistible Targets", followed by the thoughtful "American Nights" and keeps you there until the end. The album ends with the song "The Man Who Would be King" which was written soon after Desert Storm, and unfortunately the song is still quite pertinent today. Buffy Ford Stewart's beautiful vocal blending with John really makes "The Wheel Within the Clay" shine.
He used guest vocals to good effect on this album, from Noel Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul & Mary fame) on "The Man Who Would Be King", and Roseanne Cash on "Women" to wife Buffy Ford Stewart on "The Wheel Within the Clay", "Dealing with the Night" and "The River".
If you are a John Stewart fan, you should get this album. If you are new to John Stewart this is a good place to start, but I would also recommend The Complete Phoenix Concerts album as an excellent starting place.
