Music Review: An American Classic

This is a forgotten classic of Americana music. Former Kingston Trio memeber, John Stewart was inspired to try to capture something in music he had experienced from American heartland artists like Andrew Wyeth. A visual artist himself, he was light years ahead of Dylan, who attempted the same thing in the 70's with his classic Blood on the Tracks. According to his wife, Buffy Ford-Stewart, they sat for hours looking at slides of Wyeth's art in creating the songs. The result is a collection of songs that give an original vision of the American experience, not as an ideal, but as a passionate reality, full of tragedy, mystery, struggle and rich characters. The production is minimal and John and Buffy's voice provide a vocal blend which can only be described as haunting. Particulary stirring is the song, "Cody," which brings to life a character worthy of a Steinbeck story. The opening track, "Lincoln's Train" tragically reflects the feelings both Buffy and John must've felt after they witnessed the fall of Robert Kennedy in 1968 on what John came to call, The Last Campaign. This album is a gem which is a key work that forms the foundation of the elusive genre we call Americana music today.
