Music Review: Simple, nice sound

First, I recommend the other reviews of this CD here on Amazon. Although some bad ones may be added (mine perhaps?) I found all useful, so if you're not sure about this CD read them.
These are very simple, unembellished tunes and it works well. Renbourn has a slightly sad voice, very genuine, and his playing has some nice changes in it. I wasn't familiar with Renbourn until 2 weeks ago, and I'm not a huge folk fan and a 3 star rating is fairly high on my scale.
Nothing really knocks your socks off, but "White House Blues" (thankfully not another 60's protest tune, but hearkens back to McKinley) and "Lord Franklin" are favorites.
The exceptions to Renbourn's normal formula are "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and "Sally Go Round the Roses" where a female vocalist dominates and the music gets too busy. These tunes actually serve to show the superiority of simple, straightforward storytelling.
Overall, this music is not the faux humble, preachy hot air one often hears in the folk genre. Good stuff.
