Music Review: John with George's quintet could sell a song without even trying--and that's no small feat !!!

John Pizzarelli and The George Shearing Quintet team up for this album of delightful numbers. John's voice remains in excellent form throughout the CD; and the musicians play with panache. What a combination! George Shearing plays piano; and his quintet musicians include Ted Piltzecker on vibraphone; Reg Schwager on guitar; Neil Swainson on bass and Dennis Mackrel on drums.
The track set begins with "If Dreams Come True." The quintet plays a rather jazzy backdrop to John's vocals; John sings of how he wants to be alone with his one true love. George's flawless piano playing thrills me and the drums, guitar and vibraphone make "If Dreams Come True" absolute perfection! The musical interlude stuns me with its timing and sophistication. Great! "Everything Happens To Me" begins with George Shearing on piano; when John comes in his vocals make this number brilliant! The bluesy quality of "Everything Happens To Me" will endear you to this number; and many people will identify with the lyrics as well. When John momentarily breaks from singing the musical interlude is as smooth as silk. Wow! "Lulu's Back In Town," an awesome number by Harry Warren and Al Dubin sports an upbeat, jazzy beat for this jazz standard. John delivers the vocals to perfection and the quintet never misses a beat--impressive!
"Lemon Twist" by Bobby Troupe starts with a solid musical arrangement; the quintet weaves this tune into pure gold! John delivers his vocals about the power of a lemon twist in a way that nobody else ever could; and this impresses me a lot. John even scats a little to bolster his vocal performance on "Lemon Twist." "The Rare Delight Of You" begins with John singing while George plays piano flawlessly. The other musicians come in to bolster the number; and in their care "The Rare Delight Of You" becomes a highly crafted masterpiece. The musical interlude and the overall arrangement are not unlike that beautiful lounge music from the 1950s and 1960s. Strong!
"Be Careful, It's My Heart" lets the team take a standard pop vocal and infuse it with such a jazzy flair they make this ballad all their own! "Be Careful, It's My Heart" becomes fresh when John and the Shearing quintet perform this fantastic number by Irving Berlin. "September In The Rain" is a ballad that reminds me of the great Dinah Washington as she sang this song so often. When John sings "September In The Rain," he does this number great justice while making a few quick, subtle tempo changes. The musicians treat "September In The Rain" with great care and they massage the musical arrangement to enhance the beauty of this classic pop vocal.
"Lucky To Be Me" ends the track set; and John's sings this with great sensitivity and panache. This wistful, happy ballad provides a strong ending for this album. Great!
The liner notes give you the song credits, fine artwork, and essays by George Shearing and John Pizzarelli themselves. Excellent!
John Pizzarelli and The George Shearing Quintet make some mighty beautiful music together on this magnificent CD. I highly recommend this CD for their fans; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will love this album for many years to come.

Scuffs on disc will not affect play - graded just GOOD.The CD photo of this intergenerational collaboration between guitarist-vocalist John Pizzarelli and pianist George Shearing resembles the cover of the 1961 LP Nat King Cole Plays, George Shearing Plays. Like that legendary recording, this project offers clean and lean jazz. The pianist is backed by a combo featuring vibraphonist Ted Piltzecker and drummer Dennis Mackrel. With Pizzarelli's laid-back vocals, the group delivers some beautiful new songs and interesting interpretations of pop standards made famous by Cole, Nancy Wilson, and Peggy Lee. Their version of "If Dreams Come" has an ingenious contrapuntal guitar-piano breakdown. On "The Lady's with You," Shearing slyly drops in a few bars of Duke Ellington's "I'm Beginning to See the Light." And "Something to Remember Me By" has melodic tinges from Claude Thornhill's "Snowflake." "Lost April" captures Pizzarelli and Shearing in a heartfelt duet. Shearing's no-frills piano lines and Pizzarelli's bouncy guitar work are inspired and in-the-pocket. --Eugene Holley Jr.
