Music Review: A wonderful recording of a Lerner and Loewe gem

While somewhat overshadowed by their later works, "My Fair Lady," "Gigi," and "Camelot," Lerner and Loewe's "Brigadoon" - about a romantic American and his cynical friend who stumble on a Scottish village that only appears magically for one day every hundred years and the effects of the village and its inhabitants on them - is still fondly remembered by many but really deserves to be just as well known as the team's more celebrated shows, as this great 1991 studio recording demonstrates. Certainly the score is as good as anything the team ever wrote; it includes the wonderful standards "Almost Like Being In Love" and "The Heather On the Hill," but also many forgotten gems like the charming "Waitin' For My Dearie," the delightful "Love of My Life" and "I'll Go Home With Bonnie Jean," the thrilling choral number "Come to McConnachy Square," and the haunting, powerful ballads "There But For You Go I," "From This Day On," and "Come To Me, Bend To Me." (These last three, and "Love OF My Life," were stupidly cut from the 1954 MGM film version of the musical) This particular recording, conducted by John McGlinn, who also did an incredible job with his legendary reconstruction of "Show Boat" a few years before, is very complete, including all the dance music (Such as the thrilling "Sword Dance" and "Funeral Dance," which uses an authentic Scottish bagpipe durge) and underscoring (with the lovely original orchestrations by Ted Royal), as well as most of the dialogue. The great cast includes Brett Barett as Tommy (Nice name, isn't it? :)) the romantic, who may indeed by somewhat strident and nasal in his singing but, even in a studio recording for a role he never played before (At least not that I know of) demonstrates fine acting talents. And in any case, he is more than compensated vocally by the always-gorgeous soprano voice of Rebecca Luker as Foina, the mysterious lass he falls for. In what may be the finest ACTING as well as singing performance she has yet recorded, Luker particularly shines in "Dearie" and her duet with Barrett on "Hill." ANother incredible vocal talent is the stirring tenor of John Mark Ainsley as Charley Dalrymple, set to marry Fiona's shy sister Jean. His passionate "Come to Me" and "Jean" are both wonderful. Judy Kaye, as the flirtatious Meg, is also a delightful standout. This recording will certainly show any Lerner and Loewe or Broadway fans who don't know this show what they've been missing. A must-have in any collection.
