Music Review: Razzle Dazzle?

I originally bought this recording in a second hand CD store, and now I can see why someone would have wanted to give it away. After three days of owning this CD, I am practically ready to chuck it out the window. I was so incredibly happy when I found the Broadway revival recoding in that CD store because I thought award-winning broadway musical=way better singing than the hollywood blockbuster. WRONG! In the hollywood rendition of Chicago, the vocals were okayyyyyyyy, nothing to brag about, but at least the voices matched the characters and were listenable.
By far the biggest problem with this recording is Ann Reinking's voice. I admit that it does add a more sinister dimension to the character of Roxie Hart (one that the Hollywood production pushes aside), but it is absolutely horrible to listen to. And because she is in so many tracks, her inability to sing is impossible to ignore. Neuwirth, Grey, Lewis, Naughton (& company) all do a fine job, but their musical talents are not good enough to counteract Reinking's croaking. All I can say is that the Broadway revival must have been a specacular show to see live, becauase that razzle-dazzle certainly does not translate onto the recording.

"Chicago's plot was cynical and satirical in 1975, but today feels like a documentary." So says Walter Bobbie, the director responsible for this revival of the Kander, Ebb, and Fosse "musical vaudeville," which began as a minimalist concert staging for New York City Center's Encore! series before moving on to Broadway, critical acclaim, and Tony Awards. Actually, it'd be hard to go wrong with any production, no matter how it's staged, because the Roaring '20s jazz-based music here is simply great. Some people actually prefer the original's Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera as Roxie and Velma to Ann Reinking and Bebe Neuwirth, but no matter. Joel Grey is perfect as Amos Hart, James Naughton matches Jerry Orbach's original Billy Flynn, and again, the music here is wonderful. A near-flawless classic. --Bill HoldshipGeneral CDs
