Music Review: How Do They Assess His "Very Best?"

Let's see now, 46 reviews to this point, 45 of them 5-stars, and the one who gave it it 2 gets dumped on. Well, at the risk of getting dumped on myself, I still can't go higher than 3, not when it blares the "best of" and then gives you not one of the 5 hit singles he registered from 1964 to 1967 with RCA Victor - nor one of their B-sides!
I mean, the whole idea of just about every Pop vocalist was to garner at least one hit single since that was what made them stars in the first place. They even created a category called the "One-Hit Wonder" to mostly denigrate those who scored but once, although I've always felt that that was manifestly unfair as there were so many elements contributing to that - small labels being the most dominant factor.
And, given the way many interpret what a "hit" actually was, I suppose they think John Gary fit the category since the ONLY single he had that made the lucrative Billboard Pop Hot 100 was Soon I'll Wed My Love, which peaked at # 89 in September 1964 b/w The Young Lovers on RCA Victor 8413 with the backing of the Claus Ogerman orchestra. The thing is, it also scored at # 19 on the Adult Contemporary charts, introduced in late 1961 to reflect the best among the "easy listening" style offerings.
And, he added four more to those charts, starting with Don't Throw The Roses Away which topped out at # 27 AC and also made it to # 132 Hot 100 "bubble under" in October 1965 on RCA Victor 8677 b/w Give Me This Moment. The following spring, Don't Let The Music Play reached # 24 AC on RCA Victor 8806 b/w You Don't Know Me, and in the summer of 1967, Everybody Say Peace got as high as # 10 AC b/w Spanish Moonlight on RCA Victor 9213. And finally, late in 1967 he cored his only # 1 when Cold reach that lofty spot b/w Imagine on RCA Victor 9361.
A one-time vocalist with Don McNeil's Breakfast Club, this compilation certainly shows off his magnificent voice and, if it were labeled anything but his "best" I'd have gone to 5 stars myself. But this habit of some of the big distributors in playing fast and loose with "best" and "greatest" has worn thin. Why wouldn't RCA at least have included the five hit sides?
John, who was born in Watertown in upstate New York on November 29, 1932, passed away from cancer on January 4, 1998. Why not honour him by releasing what was truly his "best."
