Music Reviews of Revival (Dig)

Music Review: Fogerty still has it
Rating: 4 Stars

In 1968 when "Fortunate Son, Green River, Run Through The Jungle" and other CCR hits were blasting from my AM radio I never imagined that I'd still be listening to this same musical genius almost 40 years later. CCR music was then and still is very popular among the veterans of the Vietnam War, and these guys even played at Woodstock!! Probably one of the best and most distinctive voices from that era, and an amazing guitar player to boot, Mr. Fogerty still has his voice and guitar chops and has aged well as an artist. True he has matured and you can hear it in his new music but he still seems to have a conscious about what he sees in the world that he considers wrong and he sings about it. How ironic that he is back on his old label after all those years and all the legal battles with his band mates and the labels old management which even included a battle in the U.S. Supreme Court over a copyright issue. And how sad that his older brother Tom who was one of the founders of CCR but died in 1990, didn't live to hear and see his brother's return to fame and the original bands induction into the Rock n Roll hall of fame. The stuff that made CCR's music work for me back then is all here today and I love it!

Music Review: Sorry, but Mr. "Creedence" is in a rut
Rating: 2 Stars

I've played REVIVAL a half dozen times hoping it would finally click, but it just lays there for some reason, and one thing that really bothered me was the drummer seemed to have trouble with Fogerty's simple grooves. Also, it really hurts me to say that the songs simply aren't that good, and not up to the level of CCR, or even Centerfield. I'm also hearing one musical cliché after another, and yet most people will probably like the album for that very reason. There's nothing like that ol' familiar blanket right? I, on the other hand, like my favorite artists to look forward musically and not fall into the nostalgia trap and become a parody of themselves. There are a couple songs that would be worthy on Mardi Gras, but that's not saying a lot. The nine reviews below me seem to really like it, but that might be based on nostalgia and loving those CCR clichés. Maybe I just don't connect with Fogerty and the swamp rock image anymore. Finally, the sound quality isn't as good as it could have been, thanks again to over compression. It's a far cry from that analog warmth of those old CCR records. By the way, the final track "Longshot," sounded a lot like ELO's Ma-Ma-Ma Belle.

Music Review: Fogerty's best album
Rating: 5 Stars

I rarely like every song on an album the first time I hear them, but on Revival every song is at least good, most are excellent or great. I'm a big John Fogerty fan, and would probably not rate any of his albums very low, but this one is just special. In my opinion it is better than Centerfield and even Blue Moon Swamp as well as most of the Creedence albums! Revival might well be John Fogerty's best work ever.

The country rock of "Gunslinger", the autobiographical country ballad "Broken Down Cowboy", the hopefully choogling "Don't you wish it was true", the hilarious, bluesy and rocking political satire "Long Dark Night", the other blues rock song "Somebody Help Me", the spiritual "River is Waiting" featuring a great B.B. King style guitar solo and the AC/DCish Longshot all add to an impressive blend of different styles of American roots-rock.

Fogertys voice sounds great, the lyrics are some of his best and sharpest and the band is tight and rocking. 62-year-old John Fogerty delivers one of his very best and most rocking albums ever. Revival is a must have for anyone who likes Creedence Clearwater Revival or John Fogerty.

Music Review: A Fogarty Classic
Rating: 5 Stars

With Revival, John Fogerty once again reclaims his throne as King of the Swamp. This may be the best record he has ever made. Coming from died in the wool CCR fanatic, that is quite the statement.

Unlike most of his contempraries, Fogerty just seems to get better with age. Revival is a vibrant, instantly appealing album. There are no weak tracks. Instrumentally the songs are tight and economical...well, he was the frontman of CCR! Fogerty's aim this time around is to put out a record that returns to his CCR roots and with Revival, he demonstrates that he has lost none of tha magical knack for rock and roll tinged with a bit of country twang.

From the slightly gospel sounding River is Waiting to the high intensity rock and roll of I Can't Take it No More, the songs are melodic and each one deserves a careful relistening.

Revival is also a very tight album lyrically. The blunt political broadside of It Ain't Right is a highlight. In a minute and a half, Fogerty delivers the best anti-war anthem since Fortunate Son.

The album rocks and is an instant classic. Enough said.

Music Review: Back to the Future
Rating: 5 Stars

I'm not going to get into a long-winded song-by-song analysis of this great CD. That's been done enough already. I would focus on the collection of great tunes as a single entity. From the moment I slipped the CD into the player I was taken back to my youth (no small feat as I enter my mid 50's). It was suddenly 1978. The music fit as good as my favorite old Levi 501's. The sound is classic Fogerty. There is a hint of CCR, and reminders of all the best stuff Mr. Fogerty has done since then. But the really great thing is it's a sound that transcends time. It can easily be enjoyed by those not old enough to remember Creedence. Might even make you want to go out and buy some old CCR just to see what you missed. This is truly a masterpiece by an old master. Those who don't like it seem to be obsessed with the couple of political and anti-war tunes. I wonder, where is it written that it's OK for millions of people to go on political talk shows to air their views to the world, but not OK for an artist to express theirs in the format they are most comfortable with? Skip the politics and enjoy the music.
