Music Review: A very mixed bag, but not ALL bad by any means

This particular collection of John Williams music has some really cool cues in it. For instance, it is really quite fun to hear a new recording and new interpretation of The Map Room/Dawn from Raiders of the Lost Ark. The other really cool one that is one of my favorites is The Mine Car Chase from Temple of Doom. The fact that these two rather obscure compositions from the movies are included indicates that whomever decided to record this had a great love and appreciation for John Williams' music. I only wish included in this set were a few more "obscure" cues from some of his other movies. What about the nice music in Superman that was NOT the main theme? This is always omitted from a box set.
Unfortunately, the one cue I really hate is the long rendition from Close Encounters. That is long, tedious and not well played by this orchestra. It seems every John Williams compilation includes that. Why couldn't it have included just a shorter cue or 2 from other parts of the movie?
Being the John Williams fan I am, I always chafe when music from Home Alone is not included in a John Williams box set, being that it is one of his more brilliant compositions. Also, since Jaws 2 is out of print and Jaws 2 had some of the greatest music ever, I would have liked to have seen some of that music, as well. What about the main theme from The Lost World, a brilliant but forgotten theme? Far too much Star Wars but not enough of other things. Although, I have to admit, they did include some of the slower, prettier Star Wars movie cues, which I do enjoy.
I have to agree with the other reviewers that this recording has some major problems. The most serious one is the recording of the Jurassic Park themes. The Jurassic Park track on this CD really sounds AWFUL. I cannot quite tell why -- perhaps because they are out of tune? It is really hard to tell. There are other cues where the orchestra is below par as well, but it is so glaringly obvious in the Jurassic Park section that it is worth specially mentioning.
My other complaint is what is with all the vocal music from Empire of the Sun? That cue goes on way too long and in fact, the orchestral parts in that movie were WAY BETTER than that endless boychoir song. It is so long that it gets tedious for the listener.
It is also apparent that someone liked his Jane Eyre music more than some of his other stuff. The proliferation on this recording of Jane Eyre music from that obscure TV movie kind of makes this set unbalanced. Overall, not a bad compilation but it definitely has its problems.
