Music Review: Captivated by Doherty's Virtuoso Fiddling!

As a multi-instrumentalist, an Irish seisiun leader, and an informed listener of Irish Tradional Music (ITM), I tend to be very particular about ITM CDs. This CD certainly did not disappoint and after considering my review, I encourage you to click the "add to shopping card" icon and get your hands on this AWESOME CD and Liner Notes Booklet! When I popped it into my stereo player, I was astonished at the virtuosic fiddling of John Doherty (born 1903, died 1980). This was the first John Doherty CD I had ever listened to and it has caused me to order every recording of Mr. Doherty that I can find. Over the past 20 years I've been buying recordings of ITM fiddlers and had thought I had heard it all; man, was I wrong! John Doherty's recording left me struggling to find superlatives adequate to sufficiently describe his lovely fiddling. Well guess what, I fail miserably at using mere words to describe this guy's playing and the word "Awesome" just doesn't sufficiently cover it! At last week's fiddle lesson, I popped this CD into my teacher's stereo (My teacher is a champion fiddler), she said "Wow! This guy is incredible; AMAZING!" The day "The Floating Bow" arrived in my mailbox, it ended up keeping me awake until 3AM because I played the CD repeatedly; Doherty's beautiful and expressive fiddling captivated my full attention such that sleep wasn't a very big priority. It is hard to sit still when you hear Doherty play; his CD makes a listener at minimum want to tap one's feet and at maximum, it encourages the listener to get up and dance along to those heartfelt reels and jigs! I deeply appreciated the fact that this CD was uncluttered with distracting background instruments and was solely a musical encounter where the listener gets the priviledge of listening to an unaccompanied recording of one of the world's best fiddlers! The extensive booklet included within the CD jewel case is an invaluable gem. It has a few lovely black and white photos of Mr. Doherty and is full of several pages worth of wonderful historical and sometimes humorous anecdotes on the life of Mr. Doherty. Of particular interest to fiddlers, it provides information gleaned from first hand observers who describe Mr. Doherty's playing techniques. Valuable technical information is included such as Doherty's: string preferences, berl, double berl, feathering, portati, multiple chords, double stops including complex forms of double stop, forms of left and right hand pizzicato, how piping and harping traditions influenced Doherty's playing technique, scordatura making the fiddle sound very much like uilleann pipes, and last but certainly not least...a description of how Mr. Doherty uses a technique called "the floating bow!" Please note, there's a depth of information within the booklet and my review just barely touches the surface. This Import CD and its booklet are well worth the wait of shipping from overseas. On the music itself, you are getting THE REAL DEAL because this audio CD was made from field recordings collected by Alun Evans between 1968-1974. This is authentic playing at its best and you get to hear Mr. Doherty fiddling away while a reel to reel tape recorder preserved this treasury of fiddling for our listening pleasure. Prepare to be blown away by track #12 and rather than spoil the surprise, I'll let you get the CD and judge for yourself. Because the recording was done in real time, it is without any slick studio tricks(No overdubs, punching, or other studio fixes here!) Prepare to be dazzled and impressed by Mr. Doherty's command and mastery of the Donegal style of Irish Fiddling. I LOVE this CD so much and treasure it such that I won't loan it out to friends or family out of fear that a borrowed CD such as this will be loved so much by others that it might never find its way back home to me. I tell my friends: "Please...Order one for yourself; trust me, you will not be disappointed." Five Stars aren't enough to rate this CD, I'd rate it as: "A FULL UNIVERSE of STARS!"
