Music Review: Beautiful

There are few albums that I love as much as this one, and with a Jazz collection the size of mine that is saying something.
Coltrane once said of Stan Getz "If everyone could sound like that, they would." I am pretty sure he was just being diplomatic and humble, but there is something there. Getz had a way of phrasing a line that took Lester Young's sound and concept and brought it directly into the be-bop era (as if the Prez weren't quite there already). On this album we hear Coltrane playing beautifully, artfully, melodically, with sophisticated phrasing that is profoundly beautiful and at time mesmerizing. On these ballads, Coltrane proved that he could absolutely "sound like that," and much more.
Johnny Hartman's deep, beautiful, and lyrical voice is artfully deployed on this record. Melodies come to life in new and surprising, but deeply musical ways.
Lush Life, written by the great Billy Stayhorn, is interpreted beautifully on this album. This may be the best version of the song ever recorded. But every track is rich and deep and well worth several listens.
Those of us with large collections have plenty of records we have listened to once and put away never to have them entire our ears again. This is one of those records that one plays again and again, and it never gets old. It reveals new treasures with each listen.
This is a must have record in the Coltrane disocgraphy. For those seeking to learn to appreciate this great master of the tenor saxophone, it is also an excellent starting point. These are some of the most beautiful and accessible solos he ever recorded.

It was a match made in heaven: Hartman's beautiful baritone voice and Coltrane's exploratory yet empathetic tenor sax. This 1963 Impulse LP is a career highlight for both these jazz giants!This is one of the three all-ballad albums that John Coltrane recorded in late 1962 and early 1963. Johnny Hartman was apparently Coltrane's suggestion, and his deep, dark voice meshes perfectly here with Coltrane's tenor. The material is well-chosen, including definitive readings of "My One and Only Love" and "Lush Life." McCoy Tyner fills out the chords, augmenting the harmonies and keeping the tone of these ballads respectful but not overly sentimental. All the players get to the deep structure of the songs and are not afraid to play in the most essential and elegant manner. This is beautiful jazz. --Michael Monhart
