Music Review: S/He's The New Berlin Wall, Baby!

The CD, which I read is based on the riffs of rock legend David Bowie, is superb! Any doubts John Cameron Mitchell had about putting on some makeup and a blonde wig, should be blown out of the water. He is incredible! He carries the show! I was also quite impressed with the instrumentals, and even more so, the lyrics. This play doesn't just rely on the shock value of having a transsexual main character. Instead, it deals with universal issues that we all struggle with, such as finding a soulmate, and overcoming adversity. Stellar tracks on this album include:

1. Tear Me Down: Hedwig is here whether we like it or not. Great music and a compelling commencement.

2. The Origin of Love: Hedwig's retelling of "Symposium". Just see if you don't feeling crying after hearing this one.

3. Random Number Generation: A bonus track. A pretty unique beat.

4. Sugar Daddy: Has kind of a bluegrass beat. Different tune from the rest of the album, but it grew on me.

5. Angry Inch: "Six inches forward and five inches back..."

6. Wig in a Box: Hedwig turns his tricks as Farrah Fawcett, Beehive Queen, and Punk Rocker.

7. Wicked Little Town: Another sad one, but seems kind of hopeful, too. Nice piano playing at the beginning.

8. Long Grift: Hedwig laments feeling gypped and betrayed.

10. Exquisite Corpse: Totally chaotic and hard-rock.

12. Midnight Radio: Dedicated to all the rockers on the radio. "Lift up your hands" for this finale!

In other words, pretty much all of the songs are stellar. My only problem with this CD has nothing to do with the music itself. It is that no synopsis comes in the packet of lyrics, so I get confused about what is going on throughout the play (except of course in "Angry Inch") and even how it ends. Other than that, this has to be one of the most original musicals ever to be staged. I can only hope that the recent movie has done it justice!
