Music reviews of On Her Majesty's Secret Service

Music Review: You must be joking.......
Rating: 5 Stars

If I could give this 10 stars it would not be enough. One should be so lucky in their life to discover this magnificent piece of work. Many Bond lovers feel this was the best book and certainly one of the best films if not the best. I've even learned to love George Lazenby in the role, but one can only imagine how great it would have been if Sean Connery had done it; how ironic, the best Bond script ever and Connery misses it! But even with Lazenby's at times lame performance it all works perfectly. I watched the film again recently and was amazed at how much it continues to grow on me and get better and better with age. It makes me tremendously sentimental at times, absolutely longing for my youth again. This movie is absolutely enthralling, especially now, and totally knowing the soundtrack makes it even better.

Trivia question: Where do the last gunshots in the movie take place?

Every single song on this soundtrack is wonderful. Some of them are arguably the most beautiful music I have ever heard. A couple will take getting used to but after awhile you will fall in love with them. Those ones remind me so much of Europe in the mid to late 60's, which I never saw, but still can really imagine because of movies like this. This expanded version of the original soundtrack includes a number of songs at the end that used to only be able to be heard by watching the movie. It is interesting to be able to play them at will now. I only know this album in it's original form, which I've played countless times.

I went to Europe when I was 20 and stayed for 3 years from '79 to 81'. I lived in Munich for a while, and I only recently realized that Munich is the setting for the beginning of the final sequence in the film. Bond wants to drive southeast down the Autobahn toward Salzburg and then turn south and take the autobahn leading into Austria and up to a resort town in the Alps there. The Autobahn leads southwest to Innsbruck but he wants to exit 50 kilometers before Innsbruck at a town just over the Austrian border called Kufstein. There he wants to eat a late lunch in the spring sunshine and then drive southeast up a mountain road to the resort town. The movie ends on a stretch of Autobahn just before the Austrian border, which I have driven on a few times. It is still almost exactly the same as it was back then. I encourage you to go there someday and think about this movie. Take the soundtrack with you and play it in your rental car.

Over and out.

This sixth installment of the James Bond cycle was dogged by something more serious than mere creative hiccup: the departure of the iconic Sean Connery from the title role. If the film's strong screenplay and grittier, more realistic action sequences were a plus, the producers insistence on recasting Bond with another unknown (as Connery had been before Dr. No) was less sage; Australian model George Lazenby became an uncomfortable cinematic footnote and trivia subject after he, too, refused to reprise the role. But the presence of John Barry insured that the series' musical continuity, even if the composer took the opportunity to expand his palette to include the same sorts of contemporary Euro-jazz/pop influences (including early synths) then percolating through the comedy and adventure scores of Morricone. Legend Louis Armstrong forged the Barry-Hal David penned, "We Have All the Time in the World," into one of the most sublime (and unusual) of the "Bond songs;" it was the first not to be used as a title theme and marked the last recording of Armstrong's remarkable career. Thus inspired, Barry rose to the occasion with what remains one of his most subtle and introspective Bond scores. This digitally remastered edition effectively doubles the running time of the original with 10 tracks of previously unreleased cues, music that further underscores the mature, almost melancholy essence of what remains the composer's most unique contribution to the Bond canon. --Jerry McCulley
