Music Review: Why Isn't He Better Known Here??

Recently I stumbled upon BBC America's intriguing "Torchwood" and realized I knew the hunky, charismatic John Barrowman from the glitzy '90s Aaron Spelling series "Central Park West." I've enjoyed him so much as Captain Jack I decided to get a copy of his autobio "Anything Goes" and enjoyed that breezy read enough to begin trolling YouTube to see what else was out there about or starring the British/American (born there, raised here) star.... and was delighted to find clips of his stage appearances...
...Which led me here. This is a truly wonderful musical collection, all the more remarkable to me because age-wise I am almost JB's contemporary and also have very fond memories of many of these songs in their original incarnations. I am someone who usually seriously dislikes covers of favorite pop songs no matter who does them, but somehow Barrowman's verve and rich, expressive vocals won me over, so much so that, like some reviewers here, I find myself enjoying his versions of many of the songs better than the original artists'. (Love the Carly Simon story, by the way--is it really true that JB asked her by phone if he could record "Your So Vain" and in the course of the conversation she actually sang some of it to him?)
Buy this CD. You will not be disappointed; rather, like me, you'll listen to his soaring vocals and wonder what on earth Baz Luhrmann was thinking when he cast Barrowman's fellow Scot Ewan McGregor opposite Nicole Kidman in "Moulin Rouge!" instead of John--who has the matinee idol looks, romantic appeal, acting chops and gorgeous singing prowess to have made him an ideal Christian. Talk about a lost opportunity!

2007 release from the British actor and performer who has conquered TV, Broadway and the West End but is best known as the character Captain Jack in Dr Who and the spin-off series Torchwood. The album features songs that John has long admired and holds dear. Across a number of musical genres, but predominantly sumptuous, streamlined Pop, he lends his rich vocals to, amongst others, Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time", Elton John's "Your Song", and Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now". His rendition of Billy Joel's "She's Always A Woman To Me" is velvet and sensuous, and 'All Out Of Love' with its soaring strings is simply epic. BMG.General CDs
