Music Review: Magnicent Brahms

This Brahms 3rd from James Levine and the Vienna Philharmonic is most definitely the best I've yet heard. From the incredibly intense opening to the solemnly calm ending, this is a Brahms 3 that keeps you emotionally involved the entire way through. The Vienna horns and winds are, as usual, unsurpassed in their beauty of tone and phrasing. I especially like the timpani in the last movement - very hard accents with very little fluff (this will not be to everyone's taste, but I happen to think it is just perfect for this music). The Tragic Overture has the same great qualities as the symphony. The Alto-Rhapsody, although perhaps not as perfectly phrased and flowing as Abbado with Berlin, is still a gorgeous rendering with the always magnificent Anne Sofie von Otter. This is music-making of the highest order, and I highly recommend this disc.
