Music Review: Slow and laborous for a start, but building in majestic grandeur gradually

Leonard Bernstein, it appears to me at least, to have quite funny ideas about the tempi of music in that he invariably record at a much slower speed and result in longer performances, but he is at the same time minutely attentive to details and wields up unexpectedness in well-known works.
I do not own other versions of Brahms' No. 2 Piano Concerto by Bernstein except this one with Zimerman.
At first, the impression is an old maestro pulling at the helms of a young virtuoso, but on repeated and more careful listenings, it is quite another story altogether.
Zimerman is able to share Bernstein's musical insights of the piece, even though he was only in his twenties at the time of this recording (late twenties, may be), and his highly expressive playing and explosive finger works really served Lenny very well. Once you could 'labour' beyond the exceptionally long first movement (because if is very slow), the second movement is one of the most explosive and emotionally profound reading that I have ever come across (Pollini's two versions with Abbado included), and Zimerman really dazzled with his instrument.
As with all other works Bernstein conducted, the slow movements are 'extra lyrical' in nature, and the third movement of this No. 2 Brahms Concerto is no exception. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is able to play up the various colours and shadings in sheer magnificience and needless to say, the solo cellist is more than commendable in the solo passages.
This recording has not been widely popular for various reasons, but if you are a pianophile or classical music fan, this is a valuable addition.
