Incredible value giving outstanding performances and excellent recordings in uncompressed digital form at little more than manufacturing and shipping cost. Sound quality is excellent, if close-miked. Distortion is very low, though there are some losses at the frequency extremes, particularly minor losses in the high end. Some analog tape noise is audible during quiet passages, but it's not too noticeable. Original recording quality was state of the art in the year before and after 1960, and would put many later recordings to shame. Many recordists in the early days of hi-fi were dedicated to minimal miking and processing with the resultant benefits in sound clarity and directness, in other words, fidelity. The Pittsburg Symphony Orchestra probably recorded the Tchaikovsy downtown during the work week given the truck noise that occasionally intrudes, but at the time of recordings such external noises were probably not considered significant since they were below the noise floor of the LP vinyl record.

The performances are outstanding and easily held up as exemplars. Soloist and accompaniment are sensitive and in perfect artistic harmony with each other. Milstein brings unpretentious emotion and honest warmth to the pieces. William Steinberg's leadership of the Pittsburg matches the sweetness of Tchaikovsky's writing and Milstein's playing. Anatole Fistoulari brings a fiery Philharmonia Orchestra to the intensity of Brahms' concerto. If anything Milstein begins a bit reticent and cool where overplaying the Brahms seems an easy trap to fall into. The soloist basks in the spotlight of a glowing slow movement, and by the final movement he and the orchestra are easy partners. Tempi in both pieces is perfect. There's no manic rushing, and the music unfolds effortlessly and at a totally organic, natural pace. Modern conductors could probably learn a thing or two from earlier approaches.

I was really drawn into these truly excellent performances. Their artistic near perfection is matched by excellent sound quality. Highest recommendation. At $4 this is an incredible bargain.
