Music Review: Late Rubinstein at its best, especially in the sweeping Brahms trio

Rubinstein was 88 when all three of Brahms's piano trios were released in 1975. RCA had a deep tradition of chambr music, thanks to starry participation from Piatigorsky, Heifetz, Feuermann, and Rubinstein, but of these only Rubinstein made recordings well into the stereo era. His latter-day partners, Pierre Fournier and Henryk Szeryng, were borrowed from rival labels. For baffling reasons, despite the sterling quality of the music-making and the great reputations of all three musicians, the Gramophone sniffed at their Brahms trios, preferring the often pedestrian Beaux Arts Trio (an ensemble that couldn't get a bad review for thirty years -- who knows why?) In any event, this Piano Trio no. 3 is quite glorious, and thanks to a microphone placement that must have been two inches form each instrument, the visceral impact exceeds anything one can encounter in the concert hall. Since Brahms's chamber writing is symphonic in scope, the exaggerated sonority actually works in the music's favor.
at the time, Rubinstein and company were competing with the more established Istomin-Stern-Rose Trio, whose Brahms trios have been my benchmark for many decades. the difference really lies in focus. Whee Stern's personality dominates that group, Rubinstein's dominates here. He is always in the foreground, and I must say, even as a committed non-fan in general, that he is quite magnificent. Age has removed not a whit of power and sweep in his phrasing, and in all respects one hears a reading that is alert and alive. the only flaw is lack of dynamic range, the tone hovering around mezzo forte or louder almost all the time. But that's a small price to pay for Rubinstein's authority -- we have nothing like it today beyond Argerich and Pollini, and neither of them has recorded anything like Brahms's complete chamber output (Pollini has given us only the Piano Quintet).
The same story applies to Schubert's second Piano Trio, in E-flat. Istomin-Stern-Rose had already made a wonderful recording. Rubinstein dominates, but not every listener will take to Fournier, who by comparison with Leonard Rose (or to go farther back, Bablo Casals) is a touch reticent. the most memorable movement in the Andante, whose incomparable melody was popularized in Stanley Kubrick's film, "Barry Lyndon." the first statement in the cello is fairly literal and low key as played by Fournier, where Casals and Rose really dig in. Rubinstein's piano accompaniment is too clip-clop, also. but that hardly disqualifies three great musicians in a reading that is urgent and compelling.
