Music Review: Well done! Happy New Year!

I was going to write a review of this, appropriately enough, on January 1st (or December 31st). However, my mind became distracted and I attended to other things.
So, a belated "Happy New Year" review!
First, the two CD set features a performance at the New Year by the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Nicolaus Harnoncourt. This concert is quite a tradition! I watched it on TV this year and found it enchanting.
Second, we get an array of musical works here. Composers include Strauss, father and son (Johann I and II), Josef Strauss, Carl Maria von Weber, and Johannes Brahms. Many of the pieces are familiar and up tempo. All in all, a sparking collection of works.
A few examples:
Josef Strauss, "Pele Mele." Taken at the "quick step." An entertaining piece, well played by the Vienna Philharmonic. The audience appeared to enjoy this bon bon, too.
Johann Strauss II, "The Emperor Waltz." This was one of his best known waltzes. It begins in a stately manner and "livelies up" as it proceeds. The conductor and orchestra do nicely by this lush piece.
Then, "The Blue Danube." This is a fine New Year's gift from the performers. This waltz is about as fine a waltz as there is, and it is performed very well (despite having heard this piece over and over, when well played it is still glorious!).
Finally, the concert closes (as, if I understand correctly, is a custom) with Johann Strauss I's "Radetzky March." The crown gets into it, clapping along with the orchestra. The music is infectious. What a way to end this New Year's concert!
