I decided to listen to nothing else but Bach's cantatas and began with Suzuki's first box set last year. Here I am on the last Box Set (published thus far) and I've been very glad to have Suzuki as a guide. After dipping my toe into the Gardiner and Koopman cantata's I don't think Suzuki's set is the most 'beautiful' but in some ways it's the starkest and at the same time the most heartfelt. There are times when Suzuki achingly captures the existential isolation of a spiritual quest for me - as I listened to Bach's mighty vocal lines weaving in and out of the orchestral backdrop at times a vision of a human frame stretched out singing against the blackness of the night would come at. I really love some of the other renditions but none one have captured that side of the passion of Bach as Suzuki did.
