Another excellent and highly affordable set from Suzuki. I pledged a good nine months to Bach and Suzuki and here I am now about 3/4's of the way through the 4 box sets, enjoying the ride all the way. I have heard a good number of Harnoncourt/Leonhardt, Koopman and some Gardiner - they are ALL good. Suzuki brings out a kind of eerieness, at times, for me that the others don't. I think he has a bit of a darker vision - in Suzuki's hands Bach's long vocal lines sometimes make me think of the inherent isolation of human existence.
I really imagined there would be more dead wood in the 40 discs of cantata's but thus its few and far between.....this stuff must have poured out of Bach...to think the cantatas go to almost 70 discs and we're missing at least 25% of them is just mind boggling..
An excellent set - highly recommended. If you haven't stuck your toe into Bach's cantata's, definitely do so...the water is warm :)
