Music Review: surprisingly successful duo

"Hey, I just bought a great CD of music played on viola and accordion!"

Enough to make people snicker right there.

But hold the laughter...this CD will amaze you if you'll give it an ear. I noticed when I bought the disc that Nobuko Imai was the violist, and that was enough for me to pay attention, as she is one of the world's great viola players. And I just had to see how they would manage Machaut (medieval French), Dowland (Renaissance English), Isaac (Renaissance German), and Bach all on the same disc and with such a strange combination of sounds.

Amazingly enough, as a performance, it works very well. The Machaut and Renaissance selections (most of which are actually masterpieces well known among early music folks) were very beautiful. I was amazed at how well the Italian Concerto by Bach came off on accordion, and how great the viola and accordion balanced overall. And Imai's recording of the violin partita, her recording debut on violin, was really great...I liked her playing better than all the "real violinist" recordings I've heard so far!!

A real conversation piece, this disc nevertheless is also very fun to listen to and contains great musicianship.
