Music reviews of Bach: Cantatas, Vol 30 (BWV 51, Aria BWV 1127) /Bach Collegium Japan * SuzukiMusic Review: Sampson and Suzuki outclass their peers with a dazzling performance of Bach's most virtuosic cantata Rating: 5 Stars
If you've never listened to cantata No 51 ("Jauchzet Gott") you are in for a nice surprise, for this cantata is one of Bach's most spectacular demonstrations of sheer virtuosity. It's a rather unusual cantata as it is written for solo soprano and solo trumpet, with extremely demanding scores for both. It shows overflowing jubilation and radiant beauty, almost Italianate in ornamentation, causing a magnetic effect on most listeners; certainly on me. Not surprising that this cantata has long enjoyed great popularity both in church and the concert hall; no surprise either that it ranks as the most recorded Bach cantata (nearly 70 recordings to date), competing only with No 82 ("Ich habe genug"), as I learned from the Bach-cantatas website.
This cantata was once thought to be part of the regular Sunday church service in Leipzig around 1730, but this seems unlikely. Instead, recent studies have suggested that Bach has written the piece for the Sachsen-Weißenfels court, where this type of cantata for solo voice and trumpet was popular, especially on the birthdays of the Duke and his wife. But what's more, the vocal demands of this cantata are really extreme. Much too virtuosic for any boy soprano (women didn't sing in church in Bach's days), thus suggesting that the piece was intended for a professional female singer (perhaps Anna Magdalena Bach), probably at court.
The performance by Carolyn Sampson and Masaaki Suzuki's Bach Collegium is dazzling, particularly movements 4 and 5. I've lost count how many times I've pushed the repeat button since this disc is in my CD player. Those who thought no one can surpass Emma Kirkby's legendary performance under Gardiner (Kirkby/Gardiner) should listen to this recording and think again. With her radiant, crystal clear and vibrato-less voice, Carolyn Sampson is the perfect baroque soprano, singing the most difficult and virtuosic passages seemingly effortless. On a par with Emma Kirkby, in my opinion. But Suzuki does a better job than Gardiner, who rushes impatiently and is 1.5 minutes faster than Suzuki and other rivals (not to mention the harsh strings and burbling trumpet). Gardiner's more recent BWV51 recording with Malin Hartelius is more satisfying in that respect (Vol. 8), but Hartelius simply isn't quite Sampson's class.
For more BWV51 comparisons I went to my local CD store to listen to Marlis Petersen under Ton Koopman (Vol. 19), Christine Schäfer and Reinhard Goebel (Cantatas), Julianne Baird with Rifkin (Cantatas) and the Arleen Augér/Rilling BWV51 recording. They all have their merits, of course. But, to my ears, none of them offers real competition to Carolyn Sampson and Masaaki Suzuki.
Unfortunately, the second piece on this CD is less memorable, except perhaps for the ardent cantata devotee. It's the first recording of a "strophic aria" that was recently discovered in Weimar. A researcher for Leipzig's Bach Archive examined more than 1,000 documents before turning over a page to find music in a familiar handwriting. He describes the thrill of his discovery in the booklet: "O God, this looks like Bach!" A strophic aria uses the same music for a number of verses of text, meaning that the discovery is only 4 minutes of new Bach music repeated eleven times, lasting for 48 minutes (!). It's a nicely flowing melody, sure; but its many repetitions make it a bit boring in the end, I must confess.
The CD concludes with the aria "Spielet, ihr beseelten Lieder" from the Wedding Cantata (BWV 210), in which the soprano voice reaches dazzling limits of coloratura again (reproduced from Suzuki's earlier Secular Cantatas disc).
So here is a dilemma. Are you willing to pay full price for an unsurpassed cantata No. 51 (17 min.) combined with a 48-min. strophic aria marathon plus a bonus track? If not, just download BWV51 from the Amazon site for less than $5; but you'll miss the superior SACD sound.
