I listened to the Ormandy disc at Rhapsody yesterday and was very impressed by the quality of the recorded sound. Ormandy and the PO never sounded better! Then I started to listen to some of Ormandy's waltzes on the RCA label "Blue Danube" disc. I was aghast at how crummy (dingy white T Shirt) the RCA disc sound is compared to this disc.
My only complaint is that they left off the Emperor Waltz. I would have bumped 6 minutes or so (1 or 2 tracks) and put the Emperor Waltz (about 10.5 minutes) in instead. This disc plus the Emperor Waltz is a little over an hour and 25 minutes. The Emperor Waltz is included on Ormandy's "Johann Strauss Super Hits Waltzes and Polkas."
Besides Ormandy, we are blessed to have many great choices for Johann Strauss waltzes. Willi Boskovsky has recorded just about everything by the Strauss clan and these can be found on single CD, double CD, and a major multi CD box set.
Many will not want to go the Boskovsky complete everything route and instead will do fine with a substantial single CD like this Ormandy disc.
If you are feeling blue and this music does not help, you just may be beyond all hope.
