Music Review: Good collection by Joe and the Gang

Joe Walsh's adventurous songcrafting and soloing as well as some of his own character shine brightly on this disc. Not every song on here is a "hit," but each one is a classic. Yes, even "Ordinary Average Guy." At least I'm admitting that I like it.
The reason why most would want to buy this is because it has "Funk 49," "Walk Away," "Rocky Mountain Way," "Life's Been Good," and "A Life of Illusion," but there's a lot more in store here. For starters, try "The Bomber." Seven minutes of pure rock nirvana, all coming out of three instruments and Walsh's vocals opening and closing the song. This track alone is a reason to buy this disc. Then there's "Meadows," which aside from it's bizarre opening (sounds to me like someone else used the water while Walsh was in the shower!) is driven by a simple but beautiful riff that draws you in. "The Confessor" is probably the best piece Walsh created in the 80s aside from "Illusion" (Waslh recently joked on an XM radio show that he was in outer space during the 80s).
Not many cons to site, other than the fact that including "In the City" would've been fitting since he gained a bit of a following from the song when it was included in The Warriors, but we'll save that for an Eagles collection.
Classic rock freaks and guitarists should pick this up. No disappointments here.

Good-natured rock & roll wise guy Joe Walsh not only made a name for himself as guitarist for The Eagles and The James Gang, but he also had a successful solo career. Known for his self-deprecating sense of humor ("Life's Been Good") and his dirty guitar boogie (the pulsating "Rocky Mountain Way"), Walsh drew a fan base from those who were fond of the harder edge he gave to The Eagles. He was easily one of the better guitarists of his generation, not so much for flashy licks but for his rhythmic sensibilities and awareness of restraint and economy. Yet Walsh continued to view himself as an "Ordinary Average Guy." His keen self-awareness and his understanding of the importance of rock in the overall scheme of things was further evidenced in "A Life of Illusion." Even the title of this collection, Greatest Hits: Little Did He Know shows Walsh, for all of his talent, never lost sight of the fact that it's only rock & roll.
