Music Review: Walsh's worst--proceed at your own risk.

Conventional wisdom is that great '70s rockers either stunk or ended in the '80s; while Joe Walsh was able to stave it off for 7 years, it seems the '80s finally caught up to him. it's not here. This is, truly, a bad album. At least The Confessor had "Rosewood Bitters, and Ordinary Average Guy had pleasing, if slight, songs, along with the title track. But this album has no saving grace.

The musicianship is simply bland. Nothing stands out. No mind-blowing solos, no catchy riffs. Nothing sticks in your head when it's all done. Just insipid soft-rock/pop. But the lyrics are truly dreadful. He sounds incredibly bored on "Fun" (though he includes a nod to his political ambitions). "Malibu" revisits the theme of the gilded cage of fame that ran through "Hotel California" (and even "Life's Been Good") with the subtlety, grace and depth of a pothole. "Half the Time" feels like a ham-fisted attempt at a philosophical point; it tries for whimsy, but it ends up wearying. And only P-Funk can get away with using the phrase "war babies"; in "No Peace in the Jungle," it simply sounds ridiculously awkward.

While this might have been just an average release for someone else, this is Joe-friggin'-Walsh. This man has written some rock classics, done some jaw-dropping guitar work (like the solos from his James Gang days) and penned some geniuinely humorous tracks ("Life's Been Good," "The Worry Song", and if your humor never got out of high school, "ILBTs"). His talent on guitar is undeniable, and he has a knack to write at least one or two funny (if dorky) songs. But this album lacks even a flicker of his talent and humor.

I originally bought this CD used at a store, and once I heard how dull it was, I hoped I could sell it to some poor sap looking for rarities (like I was). Whoever had the brilliant idea to scour the vaults and re-release this ruined that plan. And for the life of me, I can't figure out why they remastered this--it wasn't even that old (compared to, say, Barnstorm), and he made far more deserving albums (like, say, Barnstorm). Apparently, since I first reviewed this album, Barnstorm has been issued stateside once again, though the sound quality is reportedly worse than the Japanese import--but it's still better than this stinker. There's also The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get which flits in and out of print as an MCA budget album and could also use a good, solid remastering.

For the optimum enjoyment value of this CD, load it in a clay pigeon launcher and have some target practice. It feels better than listening to it. If you want some Joe Walsh, get ANY album but this. Order Barnstorm from Japan. Get So What. Get his James Gang CDs. Buy his old live albums. But, unless you feel the urge to hear a classic artist phone it in, don't waste your money on this.
