Music Review: Each one is different

As of this writing, I own the first three recordings in the Virtuoso series. So far each one is different: not just in the tunes chosen, but in the selection of tone and aspects of the style. Because the tunes on this CD were written by Joe Pass himself, he must have felt a particular closeness to them. Overall, the effect is much more like an album of studies and much less free-wheeling than the other albums in the series. Technically, the playing is cleaner and I can imagine that there were many more takes in the studio--and perhaps even a few edits.
This isn't a bad thing at all. The pieces are generally more contemplative and considered and they deserve a careful performance. They're not up there in compositional technique with Britten, Carter, Bach or other classical composers, but they're nice pieces nonetheless. Think of them as a fine musician's view of the world. Just the ticket for a quiet hour at home.
