Music Review: Might Be His Best, But...

Joe Jackson is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, modern songwriters and musicians of our time. And while I don't agree with the politics that he sometimes injects into his lyrics, there's no denying the quality of his work. He is classically trained and jazz astute, and he seems to instinctively know how to inject these qualities into a song. This is what sets him apart from the crowd and will eventually elevate him to legendary status, when years from now, people look back and see the unique quality of his work. This guy is the real deal.
On Night and Day, we got a taste of Joe's beautiful piano playing (Breaking Us In Two), and I've always wanted to hear much more of his classically trained and inspired playing, but he has rarely put his piano in the spotlight since.
Well, the time is finally here; this is Joe and his piano backed up by only bass and drums, and he doesn't disappoint. In fact, this has become my favorite JJ album - quite a feat since I love everything since N&D.
There's just one thing...What's up with the sound? At first, I thought it was recorded in mono, but hints of stereo poke through occasionally, discrediting that theory. The more I think about it, the more I think it's a mixing/mastering issue. There are other strange anomalies in the sound that lead me to think this was mixed and mastered on a PC (not unusual these days), and that something was terribly askew.
Now, don't get me wrong, this isn't something that the average person is going to even notice unless they listen through headphones, but it's something that audio buffs and audiophiles are going to pick up on immediately.
I'm normally very picky about sound as it greatly influences my enjoyment of music, but notice that I still gave it five stars. The music is so strong that I couldn't give it anything else. In the mean time, I'll just hope that someone remixes/remasters this - hopefully sooner than later.
