Music reviews of Live from Nowhere in Particular

Music Review: Good album, however from a blues fan point of view...
Rating: 4 Stars

Just to clarify it from the very beginning I consider Joe as one of the best, if not the best, guitarist around when he plays the blues. I have seen him playing live six times so far but I did not have the chance to see his last tour that I believe is the one this record is based on. We could stay here for hours describing how good Joe is with his guitar in his hands, but this is something that we already know and it is pointless from my point of view to insist on this point. Talking about this CD I am afraid that I have to agree with a previous reviewer: this is not a blues album. CD #1 is maybe the best of the two and it starts with three strong songs. I would say that this version of Walk In My Shadows deserves a special mention. Unfortunately, the following act India/Mountain Time breaks the bluesy atmosphere and it is from my point of view misplaced. Moreover, it is a ten minutes plus psychedelic/progressive rock kind of song that does not do for me at all. In other words I do not like it. The following Another Kinda Love and Sloe Gin put back the accent on the blues and I have to say that the live version of Sloe Gin is by far much better than the one included in the original album, and even if you cannot define it as a "standard blues" it is a kind of song that could be appreciated by every blues lovers. One Of These Days starts magnificently well, great rock/blues, amazingly enough the final part become a sort of Layla with melodic slide guitar and piano. Song ruined. The second CD is worst. The acoustic version of If Heartaches Were Nickels transforms a fantastic electric slow blues in a sort of boring ballad, Woke Up Dreaming is good as always, but the never ending Django/Just Got Paid brings back on stage the progressive rock sound. Joe's performance in this eighteen minutes plus act is fantastic, however it is not the kind of music that I like. Fortunately the following two tunes, and especially Asking Around For You, are greats and save this part of the concert. The final part of the record is horrible. A New Day Yesterday/Starship Trooper/Wurm just makes me press the stop bottom of my CD player as soon as Starshp Trooper kicks in. I am wondering why in the selection of the songs Blues Deluxe, that is always the best act of the gig, is not been considered and also why the fantastic slide act normally including The River and Burning Hell has been abandoned. Would not they have been much better and also more appropriate than the psychedelic/progressive rock stuff included in the show? I think that Joe should make his mind up and decide what he wants to play, if he wants to be consider a blues player or not. On his official web site there are news of several awards he won as best blues guitarist and I think that they are all well deserved. If you like to hear Joe playing the blues buy Blues Deluxe instead of this one. Five stars plus for the blues songs, maximum three stars for the rest.

Description of Live from Nowhere in Particular

Two CD set. Live from Nowhere in Particular is the 2008 album from Joe Bonamassa, an US blues guitarist/singer. Guitar One Magazine has stated that 'he just might be the best guitarist of his generation.' His blues-rock style is similar to that of Stevie Ray Vaughan's. In an interview in 'Guitarist' magazine (issue 265), Joe Bonamassa cited the three albums that had the biggest influence on his playing: John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton (the 'Beano Album'), Rory Gallagher's 'Irish Tour' and 'Goodbye' by Cream.
