Music reviews of Walk the LineMusic Review: Great Movie Soundtrack! Relives the Fun of the Movie! You Will Like This CD as Much as You Liked the Film Itself! Rating: 5 Stars
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, WALK THE LINE, and this CD Soundtrack is equally enjoyable! I highly recommend this to anybody who enjoyed the movie.
All the actors used their own voices to record these old songs from a half century ago, and they sound very fresh and lively, they all did a great job! I enjoyed this movie and the music so much that I have become interested in looking up the original songs and history of the real-life Johnny Cash.
Joaquin Phoenix deserves an Oscar Award for his great onscreen portrayal of Johnny Cash, and on the CD he does a great job impersonating Johnny Cash. There are many Johnny Cash songs which I had never heard until I heard Joaquin's versions, and these are the most enjoyable songs on the CD. For many of these songs, I have never even heard the actual Johnny Cash versions yet, but Joaquin's versions will do fine until I get to the originals, eventually. It is only when I know the sound of the original Cash version of the song, like "Walk The Line," when I can hear that Johnny Cash's version is superior, but, like I said, for most of the songs, this CD Soundtrack version is the first time that I have owned and listened to them, so I don't know how much better the original versions may be, or not.
If Joaquin is good, then Reese Witherspoon is even better than Joaquin on this CD! She has a strong, clear voice and a playful attitude. She gets two solo songs on this CD, and two duets with Joaquin, and these are the high points of the CD. I think Reese sings good enough to cut a regular country roots album some day!
The minor characters like the Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis actors likewise do well on this CD.
If you loved the movie, then you will love this CD, and it is a great place to start to investigate the real musical legend of June Carter & Johnny Cash!
I might suggest the real Johnny Cash's 16 BIGGEST HITS, if you are looking for a CD to pick up a bunch of his most famous songs on one CD. It has some lesser tunes, but is mostly very world famous songs on one CD collection, from 1979.
JOHNNY CASH AT FOLSOM PRISON is another good CD to get, if you liked the film, since this particular album was a highlight of the movie! It is bargain-priced on amazon.com and is re-mastered with a great CD booklet showing lots of b/w photos of the concert and text describing the event. This is probably Johnny's single most famous album release, (though the many compilations of hit songs probably sell more CDs). JOHNNY CASH AT FOLSOM PRISON is an album which Johnny Cash put out as a whole, not just people at the record company picking his bestselling tunes without Johnny being involved.
If you like Gospel, then any of Johnny Cash's Gospel CDs are very interesting, though they sound like the pre-rock-n-roll muscial styling which we saw Sam Phillips, in the movie, refuse to record with Johnny. THE GOSPEL COLLECTION is a good priced CD, and includes his entire first two Gospel albums (nearly one hour of peaceful Gospel songs)!
HYMNS BY JOHNNY CASH has been remastered in 2002, sounds great, and comes with a nice CD booklet full of photos and info.
My favorite Gospel CD from Johnny, so far, is GOSPEL GLORY, which has many very famous song standards of Gospel music.
His 1973 movie, THE GOSPEL ROAD, is now on DVD from amazon.com, at a good price, and is very interesting to see and hear Johnny narrate the story of Jesus. It also has much Gospel music which sounds a bit more modern than the three CDs already mentioned.
My favorite Johnny Cash Gospel project is his 16 CD set, spoken word reading, of the the entire NEW TESTAMENT of the Bible! This is priced well for 16 CDs, and is very fun to listen to for any Johnny Cash fans who enjoy his Christian works.

Description of Walk the LineWalk the Line, Soundtrack This is not a review about Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon's hair. However--as any self-respecting fan knows--in country music, after proving you can pluck a guitar and carry a tune, the power of the right hairstyle is not to be underestimated. Johnny Cash, in fact, was famously vain about his locks--perhaps one of the few things he was vain about--and many a guitar store employee can attest to the fact that when the Man in Black came in to buy his special brand of guitar pick, his hair was dyed a jet black more often seen on a boy of 20 than a man of 60. In any case, Phoenix and Witherspoon's performances as Johnny and June Carter Cash succeed more in the style and hair department than in their musicality. Phoenix fares better than his co-star in reinventing the Cash mystique, and his sweet, almost earnest interpretation of "Get Rhythm" is as charming as it is honest. Unfortunately, the powerful song "Ring of Fire" is flat and wholly without the narrative pull it had when Cash sang it. And Witherspoon is simply not up to the warbling task she's faced with in singing as June Carter Cash. (To be fair, it's hard to know who would be, but the estimable Loretta Lynn or Tift Merritt would have had better luck). Carter Cash's honeyed gift with melody, and the largeness of her voice, honed over decades in live performance, is hard to replicate for even a seasoned singer, and predictably, Witherspoon falls short of the mark. It's certainly seductive to imagine that playing a figure as compelling as Johnny or June would allow an actor to channel the soul and some of the talent of the artist, but the closest this record comes is in "Cry, Cry, Cry," where Phoenix's gravelly voice offers the same sustained thrill that made Johnny Cash irresistible--to June and his fans. --Megan Halverson
