Music Review: Splendid

Excellent, I love this style of music. Though some of the sounds now seem a bit dated, Joćo Gilberto is a true innovator, whose influence is still felt in Brazil and elsewhere, and this inspirational work remains a timeless classic.
I have to say that I am very pleased with the remastering. The other recordings I have heard are muddy and, as an unfortunate result, when I first heard these songs I had little interest, being much more impressed by Joćo's later works, such as his eponymous 1973 album and Amoroso. However, the tastefully enhanced recordings have brought new life into the long out of print 1959 classic. I was ecstatic when I found this album is finally being reprinted, and I hurried to get a copy.
The additional tracks are also enjoyable and represent the outstanding influence this work had throughout Brazil.

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1959 album from the master of the Bossa Nova. The Chega De Saudade album is supplemented by the impossibly rare EP of songs from the film Black Orpheus and recordings of some of the famous songs from Chega De Saudade by contemporaries such as Elizete Cardoso, Os Cariocas, Alaide Costa, Norma Bengell and Bola Sete. In the summer of 1958, a singer-guitarist from Bahia in the north of Brazil called Joao Gilberto created a musical revolution when he joined with Bossa Nova's seminal songwriting team, the gifted composer Ant"nio Carlos Jobim, and the poet and former diplomat, Vinicius de Moraes, to record the songs that would launch this cool, futuristic new music for a confident new era.
