Music Review: Star on the Rise with An Explosive Stage Presence

Again in keeping with my policy all reviews should be short and concise unless it warrants something extra something crying out special.This is one such occasion.
Saw her live at the recent Byron Bay East Coast Blues and Roots Festival over Easter 2010. I had coincidentially sampled her "White Sugar"CD on Amazon and was impressed.She was the lead act in the Crossroads Tent before, Joe Bonamassa,Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck (not a bad lineup I think!). She played at 4.00pm to a tent of people who probably did not know her well or at all.She even played with two Australian musicians on bass and drums(both tight) for the Gig and did her own roadie preparations.Nothing indicated the explosive performance that followed.Although this review is about the CD "White Sugar" beg borrow or steal to get into a club or gig where she plays to hear a genuine emerging guitar talent of the highest order.
She is English ( out of the industrial deep north of England in fact) is 23 years old, a sweet English Rose in fact, who when she played her set commanded the stage, and drew in the crowds from the surrounds of the Festival Tent. We all stood mesmerized by this pint sized powerhouse who slapped and traveresed the fret board like a demon, punching out solos that cried and weep and grabbed you with the power and technical style that would warm the most jaded heart, longing for some great blues guitar interpretation.Stevie Ray it was not but then again who really ever could be, but from a young woman.wow!! Orianthi springs to mind at this point.
Then as if possessed she would lessen the grip of the power strumming and almost delicately if not surgically put together chords that made her fingers dance across the guitar as if she was skipping stones on a tranquil pond.Get my drift.Despite sound limitations in the mixing booth she quite simply rocked.A thunderous applause and crys for more, tight schedule had to leave the stage, she was gone. I was lucky to see her later in the Festival in a more intimate venue and she repeated the dose all over again. Now after this intoduction here comes the review:
Why buy? She has been nominated for an emerging Blues Guitarist Award well deserved. She played a more than generous selection live, from her CD which is a fabulous selection of electric blues,made up of ALL self penned songs, of which the title track and "Bones" translated the best live. Very very impressive.The voice is raspy and seductive,well worn and experienced that you would not believe she is 23 years old.The sound and technique are great and after listening to the CD you want to listen again.Well produced to highlight her style.
Very rarely, and after hearing the much over-used phrase, "this is it, the real deal" do I actually consider there might be something to the hype.I think this is one of those occasions when the artist and the product capture the moment and fulfill the expectations.In this case, my review has been assisted by having seen her live twice and being blown away both times,however that being said, my initial feeling that she would be good,dynamic and entertaining and the product excellent, was correct and I am mightily pleased.This CD is great, buy it without reservation.
Things to consider? She is learning,I presume, the trade at Festivals and club and pub appearances. She knows the punters and plays a British Invasion/White Blue Eyed version, grounded in the 60s with a touch of Chicago, exceptionally well. She mixes rawness and power when required and with the ability to make a blues standard or her own compositions, cry and sing.The style and delivery will only get better with age.She needs a producer that will capture that live urgency and intoxicating shredding style to really allow the listener to experience this rising star away from the live venue.Co-incidentially, one, Buddy Guy's career got a similar jolt in 1991 to his, and to our everlasting benefit, by capturing his live genius on CD.
She was not out of place in the festival's stellar lineup. Needless to say as a first recording,it was great and I will give it at least a 4 star result and knowing the live delivery, 5 stars.I expect a lot more next time around to build on such a dynamic start. The next CD will be the one, that will see her continue on up the pole or simply develop into a Festival favourite, only.
