Music Review: This early version outshines all later ones.

Hitherto, there are two famous recordings of this 1735 opera of Handel - Sutherland/Berganza/Bonynge, and Fleming/Graham/Christie.
This reissue of the 1959 radio recording of a live concert in Cologne in May 1959, however, outshines the two later recordings, even the 1962 one made by Bonynge and Sutherland with a super-starlet cast that included Teresa Berganza (a mezzo-soprano hero), Luigi Alva (the 'only' tenor role), Gabrielle Sciutti (the lyrical soprano role), and even a young Mirella Freni as the boy Oberto.
What remains to be desired with the Bonynge version with all its super stars is the entire musical conception. The tempi are slightly faster than Ferdinand Leitner's, but the nuances were not one jot stronger, mostly owing to the emphasis being laid on the vocal lines alone, thus skimming over much of the drama of the music and the libetto.
Listening to Leitner's recording, you can feel the real flesh and blood of each of the characters: the major sorceress Alcina's human side, the jealousy of the sorcerer Oronte, and girlish quibbles of the second sorceress Morganta, and the pathos and determination of the 'heroine' Bradamante in contralto voice.
What remains is the 'heros'- Ruggiero. Teresa Berganza gave a very daunting performance under Bonynge. Indeed, her performance was the best in the entire cast in that recording. Compared to her mezzo-soprano breeches role, the transposed tenor role of Ruggiero sung under Leitner's direction by the legendary Fritz Wunderlich did not gain much ground apart from the fact that his was the ONLY tenor rendition of this castrato role.
I would not even mention William Christie's latest version starring Renee Fleming, Susan Graham, et al. Fleming was not ideally cast as Alcina. She doesn't compare too unfavourably with Joan Sutherland in the latter's 1962 version under Bonynge, but pales in comparison to her 1959 performance under Ferdinand Leitner.
In Leitner's live concert version, the original 'tenor' Ruggiero was Nicolai Monti, who ended up singing the role of Oronte instead. And what a gorgeous lyrical tenor! Even Luigi Alva's Oronte pales against his mellifluous singing!
Apart from the listen-to-believe singing of Joan Sutherland, this 1959 version of Alcina gave listeners surprise after surprise in singers such as Monti, van Dijck and Hemsley.
Then, of course, Wunderlich's Ruggiero was undoubtedly heroic, if not surpassing Teresa Berganza's great mezzo-soprano interpretation of this role.
The slight quibble about this recording is that it wasn't the FULL opera. But even Bonynge's isn't.
