Music Review: Lovely, Haunting Christmas Songs-Joan Baez Soprano folk/Classical

I listened to this every holiday season as a kid, and was thrilled to find it on CD, with a few bonus tracks. Some are not particularly uplifting songs when you listen to the words, but the tunes are strangely comforting and deeply meditative. They are lovely, many minor-key, most classically arranged, but they also appeal to the folk-music lover. The short instrumental pieces and other traditional tunes balance out the deeper/heavier messages and are more uplifting, though never sappy or fake-cheery. I have hummed these tunes unconsciously, inadvertently (and almost uncontrollably) all my life despite not having heard the album for several decades, and I always return to them in times of uncertainty. Since I played them the other day for my 8-yr old, she has asked me to sing The Conventry Carol (aka "Lullay Lulla") as a night-time song every night. Many of these would satisfy the devoted Christian, although I love them despite being more secular myself (and I bristle against hard-line Christian rhetoric); in other words, this would satisfy both non-religious folk and highly religious Christians. This is an unusual recording, particularly lovely if you're tired of standard Christmas fare--even though it also has some of the standard tunes, with more classical or folksy arrangements. That may sound contradictory but it's really not; for example, Little Drummer Boy, which is often kitschy, is arranged with a single guitar in the beginning with almost Renaissance-style instruments and beats growing into it as the tune progresses. Ave Maria and O Holy Night are sung in German (though I swear they sound French with her gentle enunciation). The tunes you may not have heard before are the most beautiful and satisfying (Coventry Carol, I Wonder as I Wander, Down in Yon Forest, The Carol of the Birds ,Mary's Wandering, Burgundian Carol) You will love this if you enjoy beautiful music, particularly classical music with a folksy, piercing soprano. You will love it even if you just WISH you could sing soprano (and if you sing to it you can pretend that your voice is as lilting and as vibrant as Joan Baez's). Her voice is sweet, not at all overpowering. I am not a classical music or opera oficionado by any means, but I think it would also appeal to those who appreciate a perfect-pitch soprano with a lot of vibrato. I purchased another immediately to give to my parents for Christmas, since they are the ones who introduced me to it back in the (ahem!) 1970s, when it was first released. The disk liner notes include the original cover (and you can flip it around to make that the CD cover if you're sentimental about that, like I am), and several vintage Joan Baez photographs. Buy it even if you don't like holiday music and you love her voice. Skip it if you are looking for standard sappy Christmas faire, or if you really dislike a soprano (my husband, evidently falls into this category, I regret to say, so he doesn't particularly relish listening to the entire album at once; I guess that's why he married an alto).
