Music Review: Just Jimmy and a piano

(3 & 1/2 stars) The format for this live album is pretty basic: Jimmy Webb singing with only his piano playing for accompaniment and his narration in between songs (storytelling). The stories are told in Jimmy's soft Oklahoma drawl and are mostly centered around various famous singers who have covered his songs. Mr. Webb's vocals are an acquired taste, in the same way as Kris Kristofferson's, but I like the craggy, real way he sings (although the vibrato sometimes gets a bit too heavy). The song selection for this concert CD features tried-and-true Webb favorites such as "Galveston" and "All I Know," but also a few newer songs that fit well with the older material. His piano playing is fine, and appropriate for almost every tune (except an occasional slip into Liberace-isms). The repeat play-ability of this disc is questionable, both because of a limited interest in hearing the spoken passages again (although they can be skipped when the disc is played), and because there is a "warts and all" quality to the performances. An example is the sing-along near the end of "Lightning In A Bottle," where it took two tries to get the audience to sing properly. It's a humorous moment, but worth hearing again?? Still, at its best, Live and at Large can stir the soul, such as on "All I Know."
