In 1962, right on the heels of Rick Hall's first R&B star, Arthur Alexander, a single by Jimmy Hughes was leased to Guyden. The single "I'm Qualified" b/w "My Loving Time" was a fair regional hit, got airplay in the South, but did not chart. Jamie/Guyden chose not to issue a follow-up (one of those follow-up tracks are one of the 4 previously unreleased gems here).
Next was a very rare single 'Everybody Let's Dance" b/w "You Might As Well Forget Him" on Fame, distributed by Vee Jay. It didn't sell and the B side is rare. Both are included here.
Then "Steal Away" was issued and was a huge hit in 1964 (reaching #2 on Cashbox's R&B chart - there was no Billboard chart in 1964). That huge hit prompted the Vee Jay album (tracks 1-12 here).
Additional tracks are the B side of 'Steal Away", and the last single Vee Jay distributed.
All of the 22 tracks are beautiful, clean mono and worth your attention.

Description of Steal Away: Early Fame Recorings
This is the first of two packages that between them will anthologise the complete Fame recordings of pioneering soul man, Jimmy Hughes.The two CDs will include everything that Jimmy cut for Fame between 1962 and 1967, and will premiere many previously rare and unissued gems from the Fame vaults.
Steal Away covers the first phase of Jimmy's career, from the time when Fame was distributed by Vee-Jay Records. His complete original Steal Away album is followed by six rare single-only sides and four stunning unissued tracks, all recorded at Fame's studios in Muscle Shoals.
These recordings form a vital part of the start of southern soul. Many have been unavailable legally since the mid 1960s.
Happily, Jimmy is still alive and well - and pleased that his vintage classics are about to be issued on CD.
