Music Review: Best of the Tiki Time Tour CD's.

With the exception of the bonus DVD and a few different tracks (and a few guest spots), if you've got the other Buffett live CD's from this series then you kind of have this one. For some reason though Buffett seems like he's more in his element and everything gathered from those performances sounds a little more vibrant. Culled from two performances in Hawaii back in January 2004, this 2-CD/DVD set shows Buffett and the Coral Reefer band in very fine form. The song selection here is a bit more extensive than the other live CD's from this series, going from "We Are The People Our Parents Warned Us About" to "Far Side Of The World" to James Taylor's "Mexico" to the classic "Stories We Could Tell". There's energy throughout and even Buffett's stage banter sounds a little looser than the others. This is a great showcase of Buffett and his band and to my ears, a five star musical release deserving of every star.
The DVD that comes with this is about 16 minutes long, featuring some pre-show scenes with the fans and the setting, as well as three songs: "Great Heart", "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw", and "Volcano" w/ Henry Kapono sharing vocals, all featured on the CD's. My only complaint here would be the length. This is like Mini-Matinee #2. While I'm glad that there's a little more DVD video of Buffett available to us (Hey Jimmy...how about a DVD release of Live by the Bay? Or even Tales From Margaritavision?) and I'm happy to get anything I can, to have all of that space available on a DVD and to have only 16 minutes taken seems a shame. But it's a nitpick. It's just one of those things where yo were having so much fun watching it that you wished it were a bit longer.
All in all, the best of the Tiki Time Tour CD's.
