Music Reviews of Buffet HotelMusic Review: I want to make a reservation at the Buffet Hotel Rating: 5 Stars
I want to make a reservation at the Buffet hotel, if the music there in Mali sounds this good. Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band never sounded better. Each song makes me feel different. My favorite track is "A Lot To Drink About". This is a song where Jimmy sings about the problems in America. This is perhaps the funniest drinking song I have ever heard, but the lyrics of the song are insightful. Another good song is "Beautiful Swimmers". This is Jimmy's tribute to all things in nature that can swim so effortlessly. He makes a reference to Marilyn Monroe in this song. "Turn Up The Heat And Chill The Rose" is a song in which Jimmy pays tribute to a bottle of wine and having fun with friends. I am not a wine drinker, but I think this song sounds pretty good. "Surfing In A Hurricane" is a song that rocks. This is a song about living life to the fullest. I love the guitar riffs on this track. "Summerzcool" is a fun upbeat song about enjoying life. Mike Utley sounds great on the keyboards. Mac Mcanally is equally good on the electric guitar here and throughout this disc. "Rhumba Man" is a song that makes me feel good and makes me want to dance. "Life Short Call Now" is a more subtle song. It makes me reflect on the things I don't have in life like a woman. This is a kind of song that forces me to make the most of my time on earth. It is a very deep song. "We Learned To Be Cool From You" is a song that really soothes me. "Wings" has a country sound to it with the harmonica and banjo playing. This tune makes me want to tap my feet. I love this new music from Jimmy Buffett and his band.
Music Review: Jimmy Buffett - The Hotel Is Open Rating: 4 Stars
Now well into his 6th decade on the planet Jimmy Buffett can still fill football stadiums with his laid back blend of rock, folk, country and Caribbean soul. Buffett's previous album to this one was chock full of covers with only four original songs on the disc. On "Hotel" Buffett wrote or co-wrote all but a few tracks and has produced a really nice album that should please fans of his many musical incarnations over the years. Buffett's more recent efforts always have seemed to contain at least one or two total dud songs, but there are not really any complete throwaways on this one. There are some missteps here and there, like Jimmy trying to rap on "Turn Up The Heat And Pass The Rosé" and the rather deliberately concert friendly songs like "Big Top" and "Summerzcool", but these are all still decent tunes. The last 3rd of the album is where things really take off. The surf rock tune "Surfing In A Hurricane" is probably a lot of fun live. The title track is a long one and one of the album's highlights. It could have fit right in on the "Far Side Of The World" album, and lends a satisfying left turn here. The album closer "A Lot To Drink About" is classic Buffett humor and really should be a hit record. It is fun, but at the same time topical and is a great example of what Buffett has always done best. Overall "Buffett Hotel" is a very nice album and should be pleasing to parrotheads. Jimmy still has it after all these years and remains a more than capable songwriter who continues to put out quality music.
Music Review: Still waiting (sorry) Rating: 3 Stars
I've been a longtime Buffett fan, and must admit that I'm still waiting for him to release something more substantial (musically) and natural (not fake or forced sounding), like his good old days. Hey, I'm not even necessarily talking 70's era. Even something along the lines of 80's (One Particular Harbour) or even 90's (Barometer Soup) would be welcomed.
The problem is, all of his albums from Beach House on the Moon onward seem to be as though he's just going through the motions. Give some tropical themes, some attempts at humor, some slow songs, song medium songs, some ballads, and walla! you have a Buffett album. And yes, many will buy it. And yes, many will instantly love each new album (unfortunately often before they've even heard it).
Just seems like Buffett fans should be more open and honest, even with themselves. The instant adoration and blessing of all new Buffett is cheesy and fake, about on the same level as the actual cheesy and fake music. Let's face it, Jimmy lost his true Parrothead spirit in the mid/late 90's when he became very wealthy and started hanging out with other rich folks. What we're left since then is music made by a business man, not a pirate or a true beach bum.
Yeah, the album is okay. It's on the same level as the other albums over past 14 years or so. Yadi yadi yada...
Music Review: A Pleasant Night in the Buffet Hotel Rating: 4 Stars
Being a fan for a while, I understand that with age, we change our priorities, wants and likes. Mr. Buffett is no exception, however, he dips into his party past with a drinking song or two on this one, but for the most part this CD is all grown up from the Margaritaville days. There's not much here that would create new fans of Mr. Buffett, but to the seasoned Parrothead, it's another in a long line of albums that will do justice to your Buffett collection. If you are a fan, it's in the line of Floriday's (which is one of my favorites) and FSOTW. I especially like "Nobody from Nowhere" and "We Learned to be Cool from You".
I enjoyed every song on this CD with one glaring exception. Thank goodness we can program our CD and MP3 players to omit tracks when they dont suit us and with this CD, "Turn up the Heat and Chill the Rose" won't ever make my playlist. This "song" is an annoying chant/rap thing that fails misrably with me. I can't say much more about this song because after listening through it once, I always manage to hit the skip button after the first measure.
Music Review: Happy Parrothead! Rating: 5 Stars
Overall a great new CD from Jimmy. Having heard some of these songs in concert in November I was looking forward to receiving this release. I was not disappointed. A lot of different sounds making a great mix of new songs. The ONLY one that I was moderately dissapointed with was the version of "A Lot To Drink About" - I think the version recorded in Key West earlier this year has more life to it and I like it better, but that is just a matter of taste as it is a great song, that only Jimmy could pull of with such aplomb. Thus far my personal favorite is "Surfing In A Hurricane" which was played in concert to a video on the Jumbotron - cool.
Overall I am very happy to add this CD to my extensive collection and will enjoy it often!
As an aside - I was fortunate enough to be able to walk right up to the stage at Madison Square Garden after the last concert of the tour on 11/24/09 and watch Jimmy play "Defying Gravity" to a very small group assembled there. Short of sitting and talking to him personally I was in Parrothead heaven!
