Music reviews of Experience Hendrix: The Best Of Jimi HendrixMusic Review: Jimi's Finest Songs (Hence the "Best of Jimi Hendrix" Title) Rating: 5 Stars
I confess, I was not a Hendrix fan when I bought this album. I had heard ONE song, and only 30 seconds worth of it. However, what I heard I KNEW was something worth listening to. I bought Experience Hendrix, and fell in love with Classic Rock. This album starts off with "Purple Haze." Probably Jimi's most famous song, and everyone STILL loves it today. It has all the elements of a perfect rock song. Next, we have "Fire." It's fast, it's catchy, and it shows off his skill. "The Wind Cries Mary" is mellow and sweet and absolutely gorgeous. I personally love "Hey Joe." It's rather slow, but it has a great melody. The following song is GENIUS! Poor Bob Dylan, Jimi really upstaged him here. "All Along the Watchtower" is the quintessential Jimi Hendrix song. It's musical bliss! Listen to the Bob Dylan's version, then listen to Jimi's. One ncan only pity poor Bob. "Stone Free" is also a great song. Jimi shows off his guitarmanship, and I must add that it has quite a good bass line. Time for a paragraph break so you folks don't get bored. Ah, "Crosstown Traffic," if only rock songs nowadays could be as good as this. It really is quite an addictive song. "Manic Depression" is next. You might think from the title that this song is slow and, well, depressing. It is NOT. It has good lyrics, and the song is fast, catchy and has some great guitaring in it. I also must add that the drumming here super. OH MY FAVOURITE SONG IS NEXT. There are not words to describe my devotion to this song. It is musical PERFECTION. It's so sweet and so beautiful. The lyrics are fantastic and gorgeous, as is the melody. This song is too short. "If 6 was 9" is another one of Jimi's finest. It has lyrics, guitaring, and other essential music stuffs. For those of you who have seen "Wayne's World" you'll know which one I'm talking about next. Jimi said that "Foxey Lady" was the only happy song he had ever written. He was probably right. This song is all about some great-looking girl, and it has some of the best guitaring I've heard. I adore "Bold as Love." I am always so pleased whenever I hear one of Jimi's songs because he was such a great songwriter. This is a great example. Sure, he probably wrote it under the infulence of 'Mind Enhancers,' but if it creates a great song, then I'm sure there's no harm in that... Except for the risk of dying at 27. "Castles Made of Sand" I never really listened to for the longest time. Then a fellow die-hard Jimi fan comes up to me and does "OH MY GOD Frances Castles Made of Sand is the TRIPPIEST SONG EVER!" I gathered that by "trippy" he meant good, so i went home and listened to it. I never overlooked this song again. "Red House" is another famous song. It seems to be the one song that "rocker" guys can brag to girls about. "Hey, guess what ladies, I can play Red House oh my Les Paul/Stratocaster/Telecaster/Flying V, etc." Most girls reply with "Cool, what's Red House." I'm usually the one who always says, "Oh my god thats AWESOME! Prove it, and let me see your Les Paul/Stratocaster/Telecaster/Flying V." Oh there are not words to convey how much "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" rocks. The beginning is oh-so-skilled, and you just HAVE to love the rest of the song too. This is yet ANOTHER quintessential (you can tell I like that word)Jimi song. There are people who say "Oh yeah I LOVE Jimi Hendrix! Hurray for Purple Haze!" Then I ask, "yeah, have you heard Voodoo Child?" "What?" It's sad, really, that people overlook this song. "Freedom" is another great song. It's just the Cat's Pajamas. I wish modern bands could play like this. Actually, I don't. NO one should copy Jimi in any way shape or form... You cannot touch his perfection. I'm starting to sound like a salesperson. ANYWAYS... Only four more songs! Next we have Night Bird Flying... It has such an inventive guitarline. I love it. "Angel" is very 'spacy' and 'trippy' and all sorts of good things like that. I wonder if this "Angel" was just a result of Jimi's latest... Mind Enhancing. It's still a sweet song though. "Dolly Dagger" is great. What can I say? It's great! The next song is why I should have been born about 50 years earlier. That way, I would have "gone on down to Yagur's farm to join in a rock and roll band." But we'll leave CSNY for another day. My grade 7 director for the school play actually RODE ON THE BACK OF A TRUCK TO WOODSTOCK. How awesome does that get?! I would have LOVED to hear Jimi belt out "Star Spangled Banner" This track is great. He revolutionized rock music. The feedback, the bending chords, ITS SO MUCH TO LISTEN TO IN ONE SITTING, it's that extraordinary. I would have have rode on that back of a truck with crazy, smelly, likely sado-masochistic hoboes to see Jimi play live. THAT'S how much i love this album. In conclusion, it's a real shame, a tragedy, really, that Jimi Hendrix died so soon. Thank god he had enough time to record all this music so people in my generation can still hear all this genius rock. This is what music SHOULD be.

Experience Hendrix brings together the major singles with a stack of majestic album tracks and the career-defining live Woodstock version of "The Star Spangled Banner" on a fat 20-tracker. While best used as a sampler to direct new listeners to the immortal Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, and so on, the CD (which supplants the short-lived Ultimate Experience collection) does hang together as a listen. Its blend of Hendrix the rocker and Hendrix the underrated soul man is suggestive, painting a picture of a multifaceted genius and transcending its plainly mercenary origins. In the end, its effect--like that of all Hendrix's best records--is to remind us of a Jimi very, very much alive. --Rickey Wright
