Music Review: RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: *DELUXE CD-DVD* "THE BLUES IS WHAT ORIGINALLY & CONTINUALLY INSPIRED JIMI HENDRIX

This combination CD-DVD is a totally professional package. Starting with the colorful multi-fold CD-DVD holder decorated with 36 small square pictures of early electric blues legends. I am addicted to electric blues so this CD with 11 Jimi Hendrix blues performances on one CD is like answering a prayer. The total playing time is 72 minutes and 27 seconds. I love my electric blues... and I love when the artist jams without any time constraints. Included along with the CD-DVD is a 35 page paperback booklet insert that tells Jimi's electric blues story all the way from his early indoctrination with his Father's blues records... his love of Muddy Waters... and the helpful tutelage of one of his blues idols (and my favorite) Albert King. In the narrative that the book provides for each song on the CD... the story linking Albert and Jimi in the segment on *BORN UNDER A BAD SIGN* is quite informative. "IT IS INTERESTING THAT ONE SOUTHPAW GUITARIST WOULD UNCOVER ANOTHER. HENDRIX'S INSTRUMENTAL TREATMENT OF THE ALBERT KING CLASSIC CONTAINS SEVERAL OF KING'S SIGNATURE RIFTS WHICH HENDRIX HAD LEARNED DIRECTLY FROM THE ORIGINATOR. DURING HIS TENURE WITH LITTLE RICHARD, HENDRIX BEFRIENDED KING DURING A STOP IN EAST ST. LOUIS. KING SHOWED HIM SOME OF HIS FINGERINGS AND THE WAY HE BENT STRINGS HORIZONTALLY RATHER THAN VERTICALLY. "ALBERT KING PLAYS COMPLETELY AND STRICTLY IN ONE WAY, " POINTED OUT HENDRIX. "STRAIGHT FUNK BLUES, NEW BLUES GUITAR, VERY YOUNG AND FUNKY SOUNDING WHICH IS GREAT. HE IS ONE OF THE FUNKIEST (GUITARISTS) I'VE HEARD." The rest of the song overviews and narratives are just as educational.
While so many people know and love Jimi's work... a high percentage of this group probably only think of Hendrix as rock and roll... but anyone that knows about the history of *ELECTRIC-BLUES* couldn't help but know that Jimi and the *ELECTRIC-BLUES* were inseparable. I think that point is made quite clear by Billy Cox's statement: "YOU CAN CALL JIMI HENDRIX WHATEVER YOU LIKE, BUT HE WAS A BLUESMASTER. THAT'S WHAT HE WAS. A HELL OF A BLUESMAN."
After reading this exploration into the undeniable *ELECTRIC-BLUES* core of Jimi's life and talent... if you then watch the tightly produced (and unfortunately only thirty minutes long) DVD... you will have a new knowledge and understanding of Hendrix's *ELECTRIC-BLUES* world. You will be hypnotized by the thirty minutes of the guitar magician known as Jimi Hendrix... but you may be touched in an unexpected way, when interspersed with his physical otherworldly gyrations... and short interviews with blues legends... he is shown on the Dick Cavett show when he reacts to being called perhaps the greatest guitarist in the world. His modesty will be moving to any fan.
And then of course there is the seventy-two-minute-twenty-seven-second electric blues (one acoustic song- the opener "HEAR MY TRAIN A COMIN''" 3 minutes 5 seconds... and the final song is the electric "HEAR MY TRAIN A COMIN''" 12 minutes 8 seconds) CD that is an indescribable combination of true blues and true Hendrix... what more can you ask for?
As I said, this is an exquisite package combining video... and audio... and the written word.
Note: In the 36 bluesman picture montage, number one is *ALBERT KING*.
