"The Big Stretch: New Music For Tubas" is tubist/composer Jim Self's 6th and latest CD. It is a showcase for his new compositions and for those of Jerome Grant, Maria Newman and Kim Scharnberg. A big variety of styles from classical to jazz and commercial are featured with virtuoso performances by Jim and 15 great L.A. studio musicians including: Tommy Johnson, Gene Pokorny, Norm Pearson, Winston Morris, Fred Greene, Doug Tornquist, tubas; Loren Marsteller, euphonium; Malcolm McNab, trumpet; Bill Booth, trombone and Los Tubas (a group of "loose" L.A. tubists). Of special note are POLKA.COM--a "wacky" piece for solo tuba that sounds like a mix of Frankie Yankovic, Donna Summer and Scott Joplin; and the FINALE to Tchaikovsky's SYMPHONY NO.4 for six tubas.Classical CDs
